Golden Triangle Chiang Rai
Golden Triangle Chiang Rai
The Golden Triangle (Saam Liam Thong Kham)
is in Chiang Rai Province, in the far north of Thailand. The English name comes from the meeting of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand here, but to the locals it's Sop Ruak, since this is where the Mekong meets the Ruak River.
Historically the Golden Triangle has been an area well-known for the growing of opium, and the name comes from a US State Department memo on the practice. These days, though, the place lives on the cultivation of tourists, and this is undoubtedly the largest tourist trap in northern Thailand.
The landscape is hilly, divided by the Ruak River that flows into the Mekong (Mae Khong) River. These rivers form a natural boundary between the three countries Laos (to the east of the Mekong), Myanmar (to the north of the Ruak), and Thailand (to the west of the Mae Khong).
Boats can be hired to view scenery around the golden triangle from Sop Ruak along the Mekong River to Chiang Saen and Chiang Khong which takes around 40 minutes and one and a half hours respectively.

Mae Sa Waterfall
Mae Sa
The Mae Sa Waterfall
was actually a series of 9 or 10 small waterfalls and cascades spaced anywhere between 100m to 500m apart from each other. Depending on your criteria, one might think there would be more than ten waterfalls while others might think there would be less. But in any case, we thought that the most interesting of the ones that we counted were the waterfalls identified as 4-8 as these seemed to be more photographable and had interesting shapes.
Most of the falls were signposted so we could identify them. But I tended to think of this attraction as more of a Thai picnic and swimming spot. That was because none of the falls individually were more than 10m tall I reckon, and we saw many Thai holiday-makers picnicking with friends and family. .
The ten labeled waterfalls of Mae Sa had the following names from the first (lowestmost) to the tenth (uppermost) waterfalls, respectively. The first waterfall, which was near the first two car parks was named Pha Lard. The second waterfall, which was between the second and third car parks was named Wang Yao. Waterfall #3 was named Pha Tak. Waterfall #4 was named Wang Sam Muen. Waterfall #5 was named Wang Thao Promma. Waterfall #6 was named Tard Muei. Waterfall #7 was named Tard Phanarom while Waterfall #8 was named Pha Ngoeb #9 was named Wat Hang and #10 was names Lan Thay.
In addition to picnic items, make sure to bring:
Towels or change of clothes
Strap on sandals or water shoes
Tissues/toilet paper

Mon Cham
Mon Cham
Mon Cham
is located on a hill ridge in the area of Mong Nong Hoi village, Mae Rim. It is 40 minutes far from the central of Chiang Mai. The area was previously a desolate forest and was named as Kiu Seau. Later, villagers came over the area and turned it into an Opium farm. But, finally, the Royal Project took over and changed the area into Nong Hoi Royal Project.
The weather up here in Mon Cham gets chilly all year around and you will get to wake up to an early morning fog. Besides, there are many view points up here where you can spot the spectacular view of green mountains. Also, on the top of the mountain on the east, there is a view point called ‘Mon Long’ which is a perfect spot for seeing the whole area of the Royal Project as well as the sea mist. If you turn around to the southern part of the area, you will see Mong Nong Hoi village and the development center of Royal Project which is surrounded by vegetable bed for the purpose of researching such as Artichokes, Lemon thyme, Mint, Camomile, Rosemary, Plum, Seedless Grapes, Strawberry, Red Olive, Tomato, Doi Kham. The best and perfect time to visit Mon Cham is from October to February. And, the proper way to travel to Mon Cham is travelling by car because the roads up to Mon Cham are lateritic soil trail.

Wat Ban Den Mae Taeng
The Wat Ban Den
located North of the city is one of Chiang Mai’s most remarkable temples. It is also one of the largest temple complexes in Chiang Mai province. The complex contains a large number of structures including an ordination hall, a viharn, a meditation hall, the kuti or monks living quarters, a drum hall and several other buildings.
Although the structures of the Wat are relatively new, they are built in traditional architectural style.
When the Wat Ban Den got a new abbot in 1988 the temple was in poor condition. The new abbot named Kru Ba Tuang has managed to raise huge sums of money, donated by local people and Buddhists from across the country. Abbot Kru Ba Tuang has completely renovated the Wat Ban Den and added a number of impressive structures.
One of the more imposing structures of the Wat Ban Den is a very large Lanna style teak wood viharn with a three tiered roof. The viharn is an attractive building with its blue roof and golden barge boards, decorated with intricate wood carvings.
A number of very ornately decorated all wooden structures with a blue roof and golden chofah decorating the roof ends, some consisting of multiple floors are set on a white concrete platform. Several buildings contain detailed wood carvings in traditional style showing various animals and mythological creatures.
Many of the Wat’s structures are guarded by large mythical Naga serpents on each side of the stairs. All over the temple grounds are large white lion figures called Singha in Thai, acting as guardians.
The temple complex holds 12 chedis or pagodas. According to ancient local belief when people die their spirit will stay in the chedi of their Zodiac animal sign. During their lifetime, everyone should make a pilgrimage to the temple o
Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat
Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat
Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat
is one of Lampang Provinces’s best kept secrets. Many Thais in Lampang’s provincial capital have not even heard of this beautiful temple complex hidden away in the mountains. In fact, it is not even written on the official tourist maps making this temple a truly off the beaten path destination for adventurous travelers.
There is no public transportation. Coming from Lampang’s provincial capital, it is quite straightforward. Head up Highway 1035 until it there is a turnoff for the temple in a small village. The best way to find the turnoff is to use Google Maps.
From Chiang Mai, there are many ways. It should take about two to three hours to get to the temple.
At the base of the mountain, there is a car park area with several restaurants and coffee shops. Even though, there is a road mostly up to the top, you must park your car. To get to the top, you will need to purchase a return ticket for a songtaew ride up which includes admission to the temple. The price is 100 bhat, and it is the same for Thais and foreigners. The songtaew ride is about 10 minutes. The road is incredibly steep winding back and forth until reaching another parking lot and drop off point.
From the drop off point, it is another grueling 800 meter walk mostly by stairs to the top. The views are completely worth it though. At the summit are two main viewpoints each accessible by stairs. There is some free drinking water and a first aid kit up top. There are also several bells around that Thais are supposed to ring to tell the spirits in the area that they have done good deeds by coming to the temple and praying. Even if you’re not Buddhist.

Wat Phra That Lampang Luang
Wat Phra That Lampang Luang
Wat Phra That Lampang Luang
is a Lanna-style Buddhist temple in Lampang in Lampang Province, Thailand.
The first element, phra that, means Buddha relic (from phra which is an honorific and that which means relic). The word Luang comes from king (Nai Luang), one way of referring to the Thai King, and indicates that the monument was sponsored by His Majesty, usually for reconstruction or refurbishment.
The temple is said to enshrine a relic of the Buddha. Such relics are typically bones and ashes believed to be gathered after the Buddha's cremation. The relic is installed in the main chedi of the temple.
There are several bullet holes on the railing of the temple, reputed to be fired by legendary folk hero Nan Thipchang and ancestors of the House of Chao Chet Ton (Seven Princes) which ruled Lanna as a Siamese Vassal during the Thonburi and Early-Mid Rattanokosin eras.
