Did You Know? Halloween Fun Fact! 🎃

The 5,000-year-old shell cemetery at Ban Hin Rom features an incredible accumulation of shells along the mountain by Phang Nga Bay. Located just a 15-minute boat ride from the Ban Hin Rom community pier, this site is a fascinating stop on the local tourism route.

The wooden walkway and rope handrails allow visitors to navigate up and down the western hillside. After about 15 minutes of walking, you'll encounter a massive mound of shells, stacked in layers to form a large shell hill. Upon closer inspection, most of the shells are from clams and oysters, while the lower layers show signs of decomposition, turning into soil, along with traces of excavation.

People often wonder how this enormous collection of shells came to be. In the past, some excavators discovered that digging deeper revealed more shells, but no one can explain their origin. Interestingly, this site is also home to ancient rock paintings estimated to be 5,000 years old, as well as the remains of ancient humans, leading to speculation that these shells are the result of ancient people discarding their meals here, creating what we now call the shell cemetery. However, this theory has yet to be confirmed by archaeologists.

Previously, there were instances of illegal excavation in the area, with shells being taken to be burned and used in fertilizer. Fortunately, since the community has developed this site for tourism, such activities have ceased.

ในส่วนของจังหวัดภูเก็ตเองถือเป็นเดสติเนชันสำคัญด้านการท่องเที่ยวของเมืองไทย รวมถึงเป็น UNESCO City of Gastronomy แห่งแรกในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ จึงได้มีการจัดงาน TOP25 Restaurants Awards Phuket เป็นปีที่ 3 ติดกันแล้ว และเป็นอีกหนึ่งเมืองที่นักชิมจากทั่วโลกต่างจับตามองมากที่สุด
