Yvette Haakmeester:
Originally from Canada and with an MA in Classical Archaeology, she has over 20 years of experiences as a Professional Tour Guide, having designed and lead Archaeological & Cultural tours throughout the Ancient Mediterranean, including Turkey (West & East), Greece, Italy & Sicily, Croatia, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Morocco, Egypt, Libya - and of course, Tunisia. She has lived in Turkey for many years, Greece and Tunisia since 2008. Yvette conceived the philosophy of Tunisian Journeys in 2011, having been a single female traveller for many years - and from reflecting on her most memorable travel experiences and of those who travelled with her in various countries. We work together with a collaboration of excellent, professionally licensed, freelance tour guides, drivers and small agencies in providing the best cultural, archaeological experiences of Tunisia. In Tunisia, as in many Muslim countries, (and food in general) is treated with respect. For example, food is not to be wasted; one does not take more than one can eat (that is, food is not left uneaten on a plate). One should not waste bread, nor disregard it, nor step on it if it is in the path, because sustenance comes from the earth and is a blessing from Allah. For this reason, you might find pieces of bread which were picked up, and put somewhere for the birds, sheep, etc.

Under the magnificent Zitounet el Akarit", the enormous olive tree known as “Akarit”. The circumference of the tree covers an area of 2000 m2 !Not the oldest in (which is in Cap Bon) but certainly the largest.
The largest known harvest was in 1992, when this single tree produced no less than 1,520 litres of oil !!!

A glimpse into the Catholic Church of St. Joseph on the island of Djerba, just before Christmas. The #presepe / nativity scene was prepared by the parish priest (originally from Italy), showing Nazareth, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and Djerba (to where Christianity has travelled). Inside one can find iconography from both Eastern and Western Christian traditions, as well as modern Tunisian mosaics of St. Joseph, Santa Lucia, Saints Perpetua & Felicitas (martyred in Carthage), and the Stations of the Cross. Historically built for the Maltese community at the end of the 19th century, it now serves the community of foreign residents.
