The Basilica Cistern, located in Istanbul’s historic peninsula, is a magnificent underground structure built in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Measuring 140 meters in length and 70 meters in width, this cistern can store approximately 100,000 tons of water. Supported by 336 columns, it resembles a vast underground palace and is also known as the “Sunken Palace.” One of the most intriguing elements of the cistern is the Medusa heads. Two of these heads are positioned under columns in the northwest corner—one upside down, the other sideways—their purpose and orientation remaining a mystery to this day. As one of Istanbul’s oldest and most fascinating structures, the Basilica Cistern offers visitors a journey deep into history ✨
