Travel to Southeastern Turkey (with this Rick Steves’ Europe TV episode) and Remember the Earthquake Victims

As Turkey and Syria continue to deal with the tragic aftermath of the February 6 earthquake that’s left over 40,000 dead and millions of people digging out in the dead of winter, I’ve been thinking of the humanity and the randomness of such a tragedy. Unless you’ve traveled to and met people of the region, it can be very hard for any of us to really understand the hardship so many Turks and Syrians are enduring today... so many families… so many loved ones.

Of the 130 episodes of Rick Steves’ Europe I’ve produced, I think my favorite was our episode visiting southeastern Turkey — produced over twenty years ago. To sharpen my ability to emotionally be with the people in the neighboring quake zone today, I rewatched the program: www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/video/tv-show/eastern-turkey. I kick it off by bouncing happily with a dozen farm children on a rambling hay cart. Watching that scene, I thought to myself, “if our travelers could join me on that hay wagon, they’d have a more vivid grasp of the humanity of this disaster.” For an insight into areas of Turkey devastated by the quake, please join me and all those Turkish kids — so filled with life, joy… and now, tragedy.

Revisiting that ancient and arid land with its hay-dung-and-duck economy via our TV program, I couldn’t help but notice the simple non-earthquake-resistant buildings. Some were constructed 4,000 years ago, in the time of the prophet Abraham (the conical, mudbrick buildings of Harran — an area directly impacted by the quake), and others were built by swindling contractors who criminally saved money by not actually using the rebar necessary to properly hold cinderblocks together in the event of a big shake. (So many of the high-rise apartment buildings that crumbled fell because contractors didn’t actually use the reinforcing bar they said they did.)

This corner of Turkey is nearly empty of bucket-list sights... a tourist map shows almost nothing. But the rewards of traveling here are some of the richest I’ve ever reaped. It’s the people who endear the traveler to this land that is so dear to its residents. Watching the face montage in this video of people who may now find themselves homeless or worse is both heart-warming and heart-breaking.

Traveling as a means of connecting can remind us of the human side of suffering anywhere. Afghanistan... Ukraine... Turkey... Syria... [fill in the blank] — our world is a tumultuous mix of affluence and poverty... love and heartache... hope and despair. And today, our prayers and thoughts go out to the victims of this latest disaster.

If these desperate people were across the street from us, we would run to their aid. And in God’s great creation — in a small world where suffering and proximity really have nothing to do with each other — we can run to Turkey and Syria’s aid too. Thanks to all who are putting “thoughts and prayers” into action by supporting the US government and the good relief organizations that are coming to the aid of these victims of the earthquake. This is how those prayers and good wishes are answered.

Turkish rugs (also referred to as Anatolian rugs) are, arguably, the rugs that started it all. These carpets were among the first wave of Oriental antique carpets to be exported into Europe.

Today, rugs are still hand made throughout Turkey.
