Library of Celsus in Ephesus is counted as one of the biggest libraries of ancient times. Let’s hear what the benefactor of this Library says:
“For Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, consul, governor of Asia; Tiberius Julius Aquila Polemaeanus, consul, his son, set up the Library of Celsus with his own money, along with its decoration, statuary, and books. He left 25,000 denarii for its maintenance and for the purchase of books [the equivalent in purchasing power of perhaps $700,000 in 2024]”
