Excited to be one of the first passengers to fly out of Antalya's new T2 International Terminal

The new Antalya Airport terminal has only just opened its doors serving outgoing international passengers. But be aware of time required to get to the terminal - ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME TO GET TO THE AIRPORT AND ONCE INSIDE.

Alas I feel the infrastructure is not quite ready for the volume of visitors this new terminal will cater for. The roads leading into the terminal will need to improve, I was held up in traffic on the approach road for an hour. So my advice would be allow plenty of time for your journey to the airport for your departure out of Antalya airport.

Once on site you enter a vast terminal which is ready to greet all outgoing passengers. After entering into its voluminous checking hall, check in is relatively painless, the usual two three baggage checks take place - entering, drop off, and entry to departures. Once through these steps you will now pass through a huge new duty free hall, and onto various designer shops and restaurants. ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME FOR DUTY FREE to either browse or shop to take in this beautiful new duty free area. Then be prepared for LOTS OF WALKING to get to your departure gate as I had a ten minute walk as my gate was situated in the old terminal.

So in short, its vast its clean its exciting, but allow time to take in the architecture, and all it offers ....

Turkey Celebrates Major Leap in Tourism Infrastructure as Antalya Airport Completes Massive Expansion and Sets New Passenger Record

Antalya Airport completes massive expansion, boosts capacity, adds new amenities, and sets a record with over 38 million passengers, fueling year-round tourism in Turkey.

The transformation of Antalya Airport (AYT), a key hub on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, has reached a significant milestone with the successful completion of the first construction phase. Spearheaded by a joint venture between Fraport AG and TAV Airports Holding, this phase was completed in under three years and involved the expansion of the international Terminal 2 by one hundred thirty-two thousand square meters, along with a thirty-eight thousand square meter addition to the domestic terminal.

Turkey’s Antalya airport completes expansion
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated the newly expanded Antalya airport on Saturday, announcing it can accommodate up to 82 million passengers annually.

The expansion project, completed through a 927 million euro (1.05 billion U.S. dollars) public-private partnership, was carried out without any cost to the state budget, Erdogan said.
He emphasized the airport’s role in strengthening Türkiye’s tourism sector. “This is not just an airport; it’s a global front door for Türkiye, capable of greeting guests from every corner of the earth,” he said.

In addition to the Antalya airport project, Erdogan announced that two more airports are under construction in central Yozgat and northeastern Bayburt-Gumushane, which will raise the number of active airports in the country from 58 to 60.

Antalya, one of Türkiye’s most popular holiday destinations, is preparing for summer with intensive efforts across its 233 Blue Flag-certified beaches.

Following 2024’s record-breaking influx of international visitors, the tourism sector now aims to attract 18 million tourists in 2025.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Turkish Professional Hotel Managers Association (POYD) Chairman Hakan Saatcioglu said that holidaymakers can swim in Antalya’s waters all year round. Despite many hotels operating through the winter, preparations for summer have already begun in earnest.
“Maintenance and renovation work is underway across beaches, pools, and parks,” Saatcioglu said, adding that hotel operators are not only responsible for food and beverage services but also for ensuring the safety and security of their guests.

He added that lifeguard teams have completed their training, beaches are being groomed and cleaned, and sunshades and piers are being installed. “There’s a flurry of activity. Our goal was to complete preparations in time for the Ramadan Bayram (also known as Eid al-Fitr) holiday,” he said.

“We want to present guests with the same picturesque setting they remember from summer. Clean facilities, pools, and beaches will be ready to welcome them.”

Saatcioglu also emphasized that the majority of Antalya’s beaches hold the prestigious Blue Flag certification, expressing confidence that the region will set new records in tourism this year.

25/03/2025

Türkiye saw a slight increase in the number of foreign visitors in the first two months of 2025 despite a decline in February, official data showed on Friday.

Some 4.3 million tourists arrived in the January-February period, a 0.03% increase from a year ago, the Culture and Tourism Ministry said.

In February alone, 2.17 million foreigners visited Türkiye, down 5.34% on a yearly basis. The same number had arrived in January, which marked a record for the month.

Tourists' arrivals jumped to 52.63 million last year, surpassing the previous high of 49.2 million in 2023. That figure reached 62.27 million when visits by Turks living abroad are included.

Iranians again unseated Russians to become top visitors last month. Some 223,222 Iranians arrived last month, followed by Germany at 179,512 and Russia at 167,611, the ministry data showed.

Arrivals over the recent years have been spearheaded by tourists from Russia and Europe, mainly Germany and the United Kingdom.

Iranians' arrivals reached 463,865 in the January-February period. They were followed by Russians at 371,344 and Germans at 330,070. Bulgaria and the United Kingdom rounded the top five.

Istanbul, Türkiye's largest city by population and a top tourist draw, welcomed 57.8% of all foreign visitors, or nearly 1.25 million, in the two-month period.

It was followed by Edirne in northwestern Türkiye, which borders both Bulgaria and Greece, and the Mediterranean resort city of Antalya.

Tourism is a vital industry that Türkiye relies on to help flip its chronic current account deficit to a surplus.

The sector contributes about 10% to Türkiye's gross domestic product (GDP), and accounts for about 5% of total employment.

For 2025, the government estimates 64 million visitors and some $63.6 billion in revenues. The income jumped 8.3% in 2024 to $61.1 billion and blew past the previous high of $54.3 billion in 2023.

20/03/2025

For years, Türkiye has been a favored destination for travelers on a budget, offering a unique blend of stunning coastlines, rich history, and vibrant culture at affordable prices. However, recent developments have caused a shift in the country’s appeal, particularly for those hoping to indulge in the luxury shopping and tourism experiences it once readily offered at lower costs. Travelers, from budget-conscious tourists to luxury seekers, have found themselves facing higher-than-expected prices in nearly every aspect of their trip.

Once considered a bargain haven, Türkiye‘s luxury shopping scene has seen a significant change, with many international visitors experiencing sticker shock. Despite favorable exchange rates for many tourists, the gap in prices between Türkiye and other countries has narrowed considerably. Tourists used to visiting for discounted shopping are now discovering that prices in places like Istanbul Airport‘s duty-free stores can be significantly higher than those in European countries. For example, a popular fragrance found at Istanbul Airport’s duty-free shop costs twice as much as the same item in Spain.

Items like sports shoes and designer coats, which were once considered affordable, have become much more expensive. In one instance, a pair of sports shoes that retail for 600 TL in the U.S. is sold for 1,800 TL in Türkiye. Similarly, a designer coat priced at 3,000 TL abroad now costs around 11,000 TL locally. Luxury handbags, once viewed as great deals in Türkiye, have also increased in price, with some models now costing up to three times their U.S. prices. These price hikes are impacting not only tourists but also local residents who had long enjoyed affordable access to premium products.

The Impact on Luxury Hotel Guests

Even tourists who have booked high-end accommodations in luxury hotels are feeling the sting of rising costs. Many visitors, expecting Türkiye to remain the affordable destination they once knew, have been caught off guard by the increasing prices for dining, shopping, and everyday services. Even luxury travelers, who typically expect to spend generously, are questioning their purchases and reconsidering whether they are still getting good value for their money.

This change isn’t just limited to high-end products. Everyday essentials, such as food, transportation, and personal care items, have also risen in price. Basic goods like fresh produce, cleaning supplies, and unprocessed food have become increasingly expensive, a burden both for residents and tourists alike.

Economic Factors Behind Rising Prices

The rise in prices across Türkiye can be attributed to a combination of economic factors. Despite having a strong production base and skilled labor force, Türkiye struggles with brand competitiveness and the ability to produce value-added goods. This results in imported goods and international brands being marked up significantly, creating a stark contrast between local products and those sourced from abroad. For tourists, the exchange rate might not be enough to offset the high cost of these goods.

Even when adjusted for exchange rates, Türkiye remains an expensive destination compared to many of its neighbors. This shift is distorting tourists’ perceptions of affordability, making everyday purchases feel far more expensive than in other popular destinations. Turkey’s pricing model is thus beginning to alienate travelers who once flocked to the country for its cost-effectiveness, making the destination less attractive for both luxury and budget travelers alike.

The Growing Economic Divide and Discontent Among Locals

Young people in Türkiye are also feeling the effects of rising prices, with many expressing frustration over the widening economic gap. Exposure to the lifestyles of their peers in other countries through social media has exacerbated this sense of inequality. Despite the effort many put into their careers, many locals feel that their financial advantages have been diminishing.

At the same time, many Turkish travelers are now opting to shop abroad, preferring to make their purchases in Europe or the United States, where prices remain more competitive. This trend has intensified due to a new tax regulation on online shopping from abroad, making imported goods even more expensive within Türkiye. As a result, many Turks now spend significant amounts on tax-free shopping in Europe, further contributing to the country’s growing perception as a less favorable shopping destination.

Is Türkiye’s Economic Model Sustainable?

As Türkiye’s economic challenges continue, both locals and tourists are questioning whether its current model is sustainable. As Türkiye raises prices across several sectors, it risks pricing out tourists who have long visited for its affordability. While the country’s rich cultural heritage, history, and natural beauty continue to attract visitors, the changing pricing landscape may prompt travelers to rethink their plans.

There are growing concerns about whether Türkiye will adjust its pricing strategy to remain competitive in the global tourism market or whether it will continue down a path of increasing costs. Many wonder whether the rise in prices will drive tourists away in favor of more affordable alternatives elsewhere. Travelers, once drawn to the country for its bargains, may no longer see it as the budget-friendly destination they once enjoyed.

What’s Next for Türkiye as a Tourist Destination?

While Türkiye continues to be a popular destination for its history, culture, and natural beauty, its rising costs are beginning to impact its reputation. Tourists who once flocked to the country for great deals are now rethinking their choices. Iconic spots like Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and Bodrum’s luxury boutiques may no longer hold the same appeal for travelers hoping to find value for money. The future of Türkiye’s tourism industry will depend on whether it can adapt to these rising costs and whether it can balance its growing prices with the expectations of its global visitors.

A short flight from Liverpool will take you to one of the most beautiful and affordable cities in the Mediterranean. Antalya on Turkey's southern coast offers sandy beaches, buzzing nightlife and breathtaking views.

Flanked by the Ta**us Mountains, Antalya is regarded as the capital of Turkish tourism and the jewel of the country's Riviera. In 2023, Euromonitor International said the city welcomed 16.5 million international visitors, making it the fourth most visited city in the world after Istanbul, London and Dubai.

Many tourists will be drawn to the city not only for its beauty and charm, but also because it is a genuinely affordable place to travel. You can eat and drink like a king for a fraction of the price you'd pay in a western European city. Best of all, it's lovely and warm at this time of the year. While we're still wrapped up in our winter coats, visitors to Antalya will enjoy temperatures of 23C this week.

The city itself features romantic old quarters (Kaleici) complete with cobblestone streets, Ottoman mansions and traditional restaurants. There is even a Panoramic Elevator that will give you a breathtaking view across the old quarter.

"History lovers can explore the ancient Greek and Roman ruins scattered across the landscape, while those who prefer to immerse themselves in nature can set off on stunning hiking routes. Then there are the golden sandy beaches to enjoy.

"You can also explore the green and tranquil Karaalioğlu Park, an oasis in the city centre that boasts stunning views of the Mediterranean. At night, sample the buzzing nightlife of Antalya, which caters to a wide range of musical tastes.
"Relaxation could be Antalya’s middle name. The city offers an array of local hammams and Turkish baths. A favourite for many locals is the Demirhan Hamam, where you will find saunas, steam baths and oil massages awaiting you. Or if spas aren’t your scene, you can simply relax on one of the local beaches."

The Athena Temple, located in the ancient city of Side in Antalya, has completed its restoration and is now open to visitors. Situated at the entrance of the ancient harbor in the Manavgat district, the temple is known to date back 2,000 years.

Dedicated to Athena, the chief goddess of the city, the temple stands next to the Temple of Apollo. It offers visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of the past through its ancient ruins.

Some of the temple's columns were restored by placing original pieces back in place during the restoration efforts, which were completed last year by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The temple, one of the most sought-after landmarks in the city, attracts both local and foreign tourists with its architectural structure and columns that carry traces of history.

Professor Feriştah Alanyalı, the head of the Side Archaeological Excavation and a faculty member at the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Arts at Anadolu University, spoke to the Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondent about the project. She mentioned that the Side Ancient City is one of the sites supported under the "Future Heritage Project," initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2023.

The recently restored Side Museum in Antalya’s Manavgat district is offering visitors a captivating journey through the history of civilizations, boasting a rich collection of 3,309 archaeological artifacts and 9,484 coins.

The museum, housed in an ancient Roman bathhouse dating back to the second century A.D., has been welcoming visitors since 1962. Following a comprehensive restoration by Türkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the museum now shines with artifacts from the Late Bronze Age, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.

The museum’s collection includes statues, sarcophagi, inscriptions, reliefs, busts, jewelry, architectural pieces, terracotta, glass, and bronze findings. As part of the ‘Heritage for the Future’ project, significant renovations were made, including new displays in both indoor and outdoor exhibition areas.

The thematic displays, enriched by recent archaeological finds, enhance the museum’s already impressive atmosphere.

Professor Feristah Alanyali, Head of the Side Ancient City Excavation and lecturer at Anadolu University’s Faculty of Literature, emphasized the museum’s importance. “Our museum has an extensive collection from Side and its surroundings, including artifacts dating back to the Late Bronze Age. These findings show the region’s historical significance since the Hittite period,” she noted.

The Side Museum is not only a hub for local artifacts but also a testament to the area’s ongoing archaeological work. Since 2014, increased excavations in Side have brought a wealth of new artifacts, making it one of the most prominent site museums in Türkiye.
