The “Ottoman slap” was a technique used by the Ottoman soldiers when they were unarmed or attacked to stupefy the enemy by hitting with both sides of the hand. It was done by hitting the opponent with an untangled arm and hand, and a quick movement of the shoulder. It was usually done to both sides of the face and the nape of the neck. It could be lethal depending on the intensity of the slap. Thus, an Ottoman slap was extremely painful and could be deathly as well. At times the slap was so hard that it was enough to break a nose, skull, or the neck of a grown man.

Ottoman legacy alive in the state of Pakistan 🇵🇰!

The 1st Commando Battalion (Yildram) of the Pakistani elite commandos, Special Services Group (SSG) is named after Sultan Yildirim Bayezid I. The thunderbolt is also used in SSG insignia as shown below. Yildirim was a sobriquet given to Sultan Bayezid 1 for the speed with which he could mobilize his army.

On this day, January 23, 1517 CE, the Battle of Raydaniyya was fought between the Mamluks and the Ottomans. Ottomans won the battle and annexed the entire Mamluk Sultanate into the Ottoman Empire including Hejaz. Thus, Sultan Selim became the first Ottoman Caliph after establishing the Ottoman power in the holy cities of Makkah and Medina.

The causes of the war between the Ottoman Empire 🇹🇷and the Mamluk State :

1 - The Mamluk state allied itself with the Safavids in Iran who spread the Shiite sect in the Arab sunni regions
2 - The Mamluk state, after Portugal's occupation of the Red sea, became weak and ruled with tyranny and oppression for the people.
3 - Selim Yavuz the First saved the tomb of the Holy Prophet because the Portuguese sent soldiers to storm Mecca and Medina to demolish the Kaaba and exhume the honorable tomb.. The Mamluk state did nothing against that so Sultan Selim sent his forces to confront them and prevent them, and he was able to make the Red Sea a closed lake to the Crusaders.

4 - The spread of poverty in the Mamluk state, which prompted the notables in Egypt and the Levant to send requests for help from the Ottoman Sultan Selim..
