Abdülmecid Efendi, known as the last caliph of the Ottoman Empire, was also renowned for his passion and talent in painting. His works often depicted historical scenes, animal figures, landscapes, still lifes, and especially portraits, while architectural details were rarely the focus of his art. In this regard, Mosque Entrance, part of the Sakıp Sabancı Museum Collection, stands out as a rare example of his attention to architectural elements.

The space depicted in this painting has not been identified. However, it is evident that the artist incorporated elements of early Islamic architecture. Details reminiscent of structures such as the Alhambra Palace in the Andalusian Umayyad city of Granada or the Great Mosque of Kairouan in North Africa suggest that Abdülmecid Efendi took inspiration from photographs in books and postcards featuring Islamic architecture from his library. This demonstrates his deep interest in traditional Islamic architecture and his inclination to explore it artistically.

Throughout his career, Abdülmecid Efendi blended the traditional Ottoman artistic approach with Western styles, creating a unique synthesis in his paintings. His contributions to the cultural life of his era extended beyond his role as a painter, solidifying his place as a significa figure in both the art world and intellectual circles. ✨

Matrakçı Nasûh’s depiction of Istanbul is a prime example of Ottoman miniature art, presenting the city from a bird’s-eye view from the Golden Horn. His artwork draws from earlier European bird’s-eye maps but is uniquely enriched with intricate details that showcase the vibrant life of 16th-century Istanbul. Significant structures like the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar, and the majestic Süleymaniye Mosque are meticulously depicted, while other landmarks such as Üsküdar and the Maiden’s Tower are shown in smaller scale, providing a sense of perspective.

The Galata district is illustrated as a hill rising towards the Galata Tower, encircled by the city walls, while ships sail across the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara. Galleons firing cannons in front of the dockyards and the trees and colorful plants in the background emphasize Matrakçı’s exceptional skills not only as a city illustrator but also as a master calligrapher. His use of vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and fine details reflect the influence of Islamic miniature traditions, where human figures and scenes were often rendered with symbolism and stylized elegance rather than realism.

This artwork serves as a unique document of Istanbul in the 1530s, showcasing not only the architectural grandeur of the city but also the richness of its natural surroundings and maritime activities. As a masterpiece of Ottoman miniature art, it offers valuable insight into the cultural and historical landscape of the period. ✨

Sultan Mustafa III, the 26th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, owned a magnificent suit of armor that remains one of the most remarkable artifacts in the Topkapi Palace Museum.

Adorned with diamonds, gold, and precious stones, this splendid armor is displayed in the 4th gallery of the Fatih Köşk. The steel armor is embellished with gold medallions, diamonds, rubies, and pearls. Instead of a traditional plume, the helmet features a crest decorated with diamonds and rubies. The sword attached to the armor is also encrusted with jewels.💎

Despite this magnificent attire, it is known that Sultan Mustafa never participated in any military campaigns. Therefore, it is believed that this armor was used primarily for ceremonial purposes.

Yervant Oskan Efendi was the first sculpture instructor at the Imperial School of Fine Arts (Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi) in the Ottoman Empire. Born in Istanbul in 1855, he studied in Rome and France, where he was influenced by the Italian naturalist movement.

Oskan played a key role in training the first generation of Turkish sculptors and worked closely with Osman Hamdi Bey. He participated in archaeological excavations and restorations, and after working on large-scale sculptures in Paris, he returned to Istanbul to teach at Sanayi-i Nefise.

His works were displayed in the 1901-1903 Istanbul Salon Exhibitions, with his most famous piece being the bust of Naile Hanım, the wife of Osman Hamdi Bey, which is currently exhibited at the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture. ✨
