📷📷 Dome Angel Figures

The pendentives feature four unidentical angel figures. It is believed that these one headed six winged angels (seraphim) protect the Lord’s Throne in Heaven. The angels featured in the East are composed of mosaics whereas the two in the West have been damaged during the Eastern Roman period and have been renewed as fresco.

The faces of the angel figures featured on the pendentives were covered up with star shaped metallic lids during the Ottoman period. During the mosaic renovations in 2009, the lids covering the angel figures’ faces were opened and revealed.

📷📷 The history of Turkish carpets date back to the nomadic roots of the Turks in the Central Asia.

Carpet had a strong influence in nomadic tribes. Because they were moving quite often and lived in tents, carpet was a portable object which made the ground easy to step on.

Initially, carpet was used due to its functionality and later it had decorative features in order to adapt to tents and surrounding environment.

The oldest carpet is Pazyryk carpet dating back to 400 BC. Found during archeological excavations in Siberia, the history of this carpet date back to the period of Scythians. It is exhibited today in Hermitage Museum in Russia.

📷📷 Istanbul’s historic peninsula is surely one of Istanbul’s highlights and offers many interesting sights including the city’s landmarks Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Not far from those imposing structures you can find the German Fountain (Alman Çeşmesi) located at the northern end of the Hippodrome. Together with its magnificent dome it stands as an important symbol of the close relationship between the Ottoman Empire and Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. During that time, Germany increasingly gained political influence in the Middle Eastern sphere, which would last until the Ottoman German alliance in the First World War. The fountain was built in 1898 to remember the visit of the German Emperor Wilhelm II in the same year.

📷📷 The Palace is located along the European shore of the Strait.
Originally there was a shallow bay where the fleet used to anchor their ships. 🚢
After the 17th century the coast was filled in and converted into a nice garden with a couple of pavilions named as Waterfront Palace complex, where the sultans used to relax enjoying the views. By the way, Dolmabahce literally means "filled garden" in Turkish language. In 1843 sultan Abdülmecid I ordered to build a new palace taking away these old buildings, and imperial architectsGarabet and Nikogos Balyan finished the construction in 1856.
Dolmabahce was used as a secondary palace by the successor of Abdulmecid after his death, it became a winter residence meanwhile Beylerbeyi Palace was used as the summer residence ☀
Only after two sultans the imperial family moved back to the Dolmabahce with sultan Mehmed V and lived there until the proclamation of the Republic at the end of War of Liberation.
The Parliament decided to use Dolmabahce as a presidential palace thus Atatürk stayed and received foreign guests here during his visits to Istanbul. He died in the palace on 10th of November 1938, later on it was converted into a museum in 1952. 🔆

The Maiden's Tower, which inspired films and poems with its beauty, is one of the most beautiful buildings of Istanbul. Moving historical and unique landscape, the name of the kind of legends derived from the kind of tower at least Topkapi Palace, makes the Blue Mosque as interesting.

The tower, built on a small island, is about 18 meters high. The building, which consists of 5 floors, is the last Byzantine structure in Üsküdar District. The tower was named after Damalis, the wife of King Chares of Athens in ancient times. The tower, which was inspired by legend, was called kule Tower of Leandros Biz, was called ’Arcla“ during the Byzantine period. Those who gave the name to the historical building today are the Ottomans.

It was built by the Athenian Alkibiades in order to control the traffic in the Bosphorus and take taxes from them. The building, which became an important control point thanks to the chain pulled from Sarayburnu Beach, was built in 341 BC by Chares, a sarcophagus for his wife.

Ortaköy Mosque 📷

Built on the sight of an 18th century mosque (built by Mahmut Ağa), the current building was completed in 1855, to serve as the Büyük Mecidiye Camii (Grand Imperial Mosque) to the Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid. It was designed by Armenian architect, Garabet Balyan, and his son Nigoğayos Balyanl, who were also responsible for the nearby Dolmabahce Palace.
It is neo-Baroque in style, with an ornate exterior, and large windows that allow light to flood into its plainer interior. The main chamber is small and square shaped, its edge 12.25m in length. The ceiling is a dome shape, covered in pink mosaics. There are two tall minarets, each with a single sherefe (minaret balcony). Attached is the two storey Hünkar Kasrı (sultan’s summer palace). It has recently undergone a major refurbishment.
