Istanbul shopping life has been very dynamic since ancient times.
The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and oldest covered bazaars in the world, located in the center of Istanbul, between the Beyazıt, Nuruosmaniye and Mercan districts. There are approximately 4,000 shops in the Grand Bazaar, and the total number of employees in these shops is approximately 25,000. It is said that it hosts close to 500,000 people during the busiest times of the day. In 2014, it was ranked 1st among the most visited tourist attractions in the world with 91,250,000 visitors. The Grand Bazaar is often referred to as the world's first shopping mall.
The Spice Bazaar is located behind the New Mosque in Eminönü and next to the Flower Market. It is one of the oldest covered bazaars in Istanbul. This bazaar, famous for its herbalists, still sells natural medicines, spices, flower seeds, rare plant roots and shells, as well as products that are in line with old traditions; dried nuts, delicatessen products, and various food items. The Spice Bazaar is also open on Sundays.
