All the shades of blue ; How Türkiye introduced Turquoise to the world.

This particular shade of blue plays an important part in Türkiye’s rich history & culture. The word Turquoise came from old French ‘turquois’ meaning literally ‘Turkish.’

While the gemstones itself have been used in Persian & Egyptian cultures, it was however introduced to Europe by the explorer Marco Polo in the 13th century who brought the stone from Asia Minor (now Türkiye). The introduction of the stones led the Ottoman Empire to become the major exporter of Turquoise stones.

The popularity of the stones later expanded through the use of similar shade in other art forms such as textiles, ceramics & tiles. This paved the way to the traditional Turkish pattern that we often see today. This patterns are called Iznik, named after the place in which it originated around the 15th century. Iznik pottery replaced the use of traditional clay with quartz, which produced a bright white base that brings out the four traditional colours - turquoise, cobalt, malachite & coral.

The Ottoman sultans favoured the look so much that it introduced the golden era of Iznik ceramics & tiles adorned in many of the historical buildings that stands today. In the 17th century however the production of Iznik pottery declined due to the lack of support from the Ottoman court caused by inflation. Nowadays original Iznik pieces are mostly confined to museums including the Louvre & Smithsonian, but for those visiting Türkiye the best example of original Iznik tiles can be seen in Topkapi Palace.

For those looking to bring home a piece of Türkiye with you, these beautiful patterns & shades of blue makes the best souvenirs which reflect this country’s rich history.

Merry Christmas to all those celebrating, from our Grande family to yours. 🎄🌷

Did you know the image of Santa Claus was inspired by St Nicholas of Myra. He was born in the city of Myra in what is now modern day Demre, Türkiye. A district in Antalya province.

He was also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker for his many talents & he became famous for his generosity particularly his legendary habit of secret gift giving which gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus, or rather Saint Nick.

The St Nicholas church in Demre is dedicated to him. A temple was found beneath the church with a sarcophagus believed to contain his body. The body was later moved to Bari, Italy.

Once a volcanic mountain, now a ski centre. ⛷️

Did you know that Mount Erciyes was one of the 3 mountains that erupted which created the formation you see in Cappadocia today?

60 million years ago 3 great volcanic mountains erupted ; Mount Erciyes, Mount Hasan & Mount Güllü. This resulted in layers of soft lava & ash called tufa. In the years that follow rain & wind washed away the soft layers & left behind hard layers which created the stunning landscape today.

This geographic formation is also the reason why Cappadocia is well known for its ceramic as the area is rich with natural clay.

Dahulu gunung berapi, kini pusat ski. ⛷️

Tahukah anda bahawa Gunung Erciyes adalah salah satu daripada 3 gunung berapi yang meletus & seterusnya membentuk formasi yang anda lihat di Cappadocia hari ini?

60 juta tahun yang lalu 3 gunung berapi meletus di kawasan ini ; Gunung Erciyes, Gunung Hasan & Gunung Güllü. Letusan ini kemudiannya menghasilkan lapisan lava & abu lembut yang dipanggil tufa. Hujan & angin selama bertahun-tahun telah menghakis lapisan lembut & meninggalkan lapisan keras yang akhirnya membentuk landskap yang menjadikan Cappadocia terkenal.

Pembentukan geografi ini juga menyumbang kepada industri seramik di kawasan ini dengan sumber tanah liat semula jadi.

The beauty & artistry of Turkish breakfast.

The word for breakfast in Turkish is ‘kahvaltı’ which is a combination of the word kahve + altı (from altında = under). Roughly translated the word kahvaltı brings the meaning of ‘under/before coffee.’

It is traditional practice to have a cup of Turkish coffee after having breakfast. In fact in many Turkish household, it is customary for a newlywed bride to be the designated coffee brewer.

This morning spread is a culinary artwork consisting of various types of cheeses, sweet jams, savoury dips, nuts, fresh vegetables, baked pastries & spiced sausages. Breakfast in Türkiye is more than just a meal, it is a cultural phenomenon.

For the mountain quest seekers. 🇹🇷

Located in Black Sea Region of Türkiye, Ayder is a mountainside valley located in Rize Province. The valley is well known for its picturesque landscape & the most attractive features here are the dense forestry & a number of nearby waterfalls.

The valley has no settled population but in 1987 it was declared as a tourist centre by the government. While the winter scenery is stunning in the valley, due to heavy snow in the region however the area is mostly visited during the summer.

In terms of cuisine, Ayder is famous for its rhododendron honey, which is produced in beehives hung on trees as well as its trouts.

Terletak di Wilayah Laut Hitam Türkiye, Ayder ialah lembah di lereng gunung yang terletak di Wilayah Rize. Lembah ini terkenal dengan landskap yang indah diselubungi hutan yang tebal & beberapa air terjun berdekatan.

Dining in the clouds. 🇹🇷

Located 1700 km above sea level is a restaurant on top of Babadağ which offers a stunning view particularly during the sunset, amidst a sea of orange clouds. It is the perfect place to enjoy with your loved ones while basking in quality fine dining meals.

For extreme sports enthusiasts, this location is also the take off point for paragliding activities. It is reputedly one of the most famous spot in Europe as you glide down the mountainside with Oludeniz lagoon as your background. The flight itself takes approximately 45 minutes to complete as you experience gliding through the air.

The best time to visit is during the summer as that is when the weather is the best for paragliding & is warm enough to enjoy the mountain. The restaurant closes during the winter season.
