Bagratlı Ashot I was recognized as the "King of Armenia/Şehinşah-ı Armen" by the Abbasid Caliph and the Byzantine Emperor in 885. Ashot and his sons ruled first in the city of Bagaran, then in Shirakavan (located in Koyucak in Akyaka district) and in the center of Kars. Ashot (953-977) moved his capital to Ani and started the construction of a big city there.
