defensive driving is a form of training for motor vehicle drivers that goes beyond mastery of the rules of the road and the basic mechanics of driving. Its aim is to reduce the risk of collision by anticipating dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others.

Defensive Driving Tip #1: Eliminate Distractions

Scientists have studied the reasons behind the large number of car accidents that occur every year, and the most common cause is that the driver has been distracted. For this reason, eliminating distractions is #1 among top ten defensive driving tips. Limit the number of distractions that you have in the car, such as eating or talking.

Defensive Driving Tip #2: Focus on the Horizon

Rather than keeping your eyes fixed on the car right in front of you, keep your eyes on the horizon as you watch the traffic ahead of you. You will be able to see any activity that may cause an accident, and it will give you plenty of time to adjust accordingly.

Defensive Driving Tip #3: Stay in One Lane as Much as Possible

Many car accidents happen when a person suddenly changes lanes and gets rear ended. Choose a lane and stay there as long as possible.

Defensive Driving Tip #4: Keep an Eye on Lane Changers

If you aren't the one changing lanes, then you need to keep an eye on those who are. Many drivers try to slip between cars, even if it is too dangerous to do so. Watch all of your mirrors so that you can see anyone who may be approaching you quickly. Slow down to let them pass if necessary.

Defensive Driving Tip #5: Watch Blind Spots

While some people may not zip in and out of traffic, others carelessly move into another lane without checking their blind spots. In order to avoid getting struck by one of these drivers, stay out of the blind spots of the cars around you. You can accelerate so that they can see you clearly, or you can slow down so that you are a safe distance behind the other car.

Defensive Driving Tip #6: Avoid Eye Contact

Scientists have found that road rage is escalated when drivers look directly at one another. Most people who suffer from road rage are looking for ways to anger others rather than getting angry about something that has just occurred. Avoid making eye contact with these drivers, and continue driving as you were.

Defensive Driving Tip #7: Check Intersections

Intersections are where many accidents occur. Many drivers will simply start driving when the light turns green, but not everyone stops when the light turns red. Check your left side for any cars that are ignoring the red light, and then look to the right before you start driving through the intersection.

Defensive Driving Tip #8: Know the Rules of Swerving

It is very important that you only swerve if you are unable to prevent an accident otherwise. In order to swerve safely, you should make sure that the lane that you will be entering is empty, and return to your lane immediately to prevent further problems.

Defensive Driving Tip #9: Keep Your Distance from Bad Drivers

If you notice that someone is showing signs of being a bad driver, then you need to keep your distance. You may want to change lanes and slow down to let the car pass so that you don't have a chance of it rear ending you. If you need to pass a bad driver, try to keep a good distance between you.

Defensive Driving Tip #10: Don't Tailgate

When you drive too closely to another vehicle, you increase your risk for an accident because you leave yourself very little room to avoid an accident. Try to stay at least three to four seconds behind the person in front of you. If you have a larger vehicle, you will need to allow more room so that you will have enough time to stop. Tailgating is on just about every top ten defensive driving tips list, and for good reason.

The Ministry of Works and Transport wishes to advise the general public that ALL Licencing Offices nationwide will be closed until May 23rd 2021.
Persons with existing appointments during this period of closure will be required to reschedule their appointments via the online scheduling portal at https://licensingappointment.mowt.gov.tt/ utilising a date subsequent to May 24th, 2021. Given the demand for appointments, members of the general public are advised to utilise all available time-slots for Licensing Offices across Trinidad and Tobago if your preferred location is unavailable.
The Ministry also takes this opportunity to remind citizens that:
(1) the validity of the Driver’s permits, taxi driver licenses, badges, certificates or other documents issued by the Licensing Division which would otherwise have been due to expire on or before September 30, 2021, are now deemed to be valid up to October 01, 2021; and
(2) the timeframe for the completion of any transfer of vehicle registration – that is, any transfer of vehicle registration required to be completed on or before September 30, 2021 may be completed on or before October 01, 2021.
Citizens are urged to practice social responsibility as we collectively navigate these trying times. The Ministry of Works and Transport apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks the public for their cooperation and understanding during this time.

Given the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the operations of the Transport Division’s Licensing Offices, on March 31, 2021 the Minister of Works and Transport, Senator the Honourable Mr. Rohan Sinanan signed Orders to facilitate the following:

(1) Expired Driver’s permits, taxi driver licences, badges, certificates or other documents issued by the Licensing Division which would otherwise have been due to expire on or before September 30, 2021 are now deemed to be valid up to October 01, 2021; and

(2) The timeframe for the completion of any transfer of vehicle registration – that is, any transfer of vehicle registration required to be completed on or before September 30, 2021 may be completed on or before October 01, 2021.

The extension was granted in accordance with the recent amendments to sections 19 (7) and 61B of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 48:50 (MVRTA). The amendments were operationalized by the Miscellaneous Provisions [2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)] (No. 2) Act, 2020

Please be advised of the mandatory requirements to access services at the Licensing Division.

With effect from Monday 23rd November, 2020, applicants will be required to provide the following:
Proof of address to conduct specific service transactions at all of the Licensing Offices:
1. A recent utility bill (Telephone Landline, T&TEC, FLOW or WASA)
2. In the case of a rental, a copy of the Lease/Rental Agreement for the rental premises identified bearing the name of the applicant. If the utility bill or Lease/Rental is not in the applicant’s name, a letter from the owner confirming the applicant’s residence and a copy of the owner’s National Identification Card (ID) must be submitted

Today, (Wednesday 29th April, 2020) Senator the Honourable Rohan Sinanan, Minister of Works and Transport and officials of National Infrastructure Development company Limited (NIDCO) officially opened Phase 1 of the Curepe Interchange Project at a ribbon cutting ceremony that was held on site of the newly completed works.

At the ceremony, the signalized traffic signals were decommissioned.

This project is viewed as a milestone as it contributes to the expansion of the highway network that will create increased inter-connectivity between rural and urban communities; and ease traffic congestion in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Curepe Interchange Project also known as The Churchill Roosevelt Highway (CRH/Southern Main Road Curepe (SMR) Curepe Flyover and Ancillary Works is the current phase of the interchange improvement projects being implemented as part of the larger East West Corridor expansion and Improvement Works Programme.

The scope of works entailed:
• Construction of an overpass with two clover leaf sections at the intersection of the CRH and SMR, Curepe and other ramps
• Widening and realignment of the CRH to accommodate six lanes and frontage roads north and south of the CRH, and
• Construction of a roundabout in the south-eastern quadrant near Kay Donna and realignment of the Southern Main Road

This project will bring relief to thousands of motorists who travel along the CRH daily.

Key Project Benefits also include:

•reduction in traffic congestion
•increased capacity on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway
•improved access to / from adjacent communities
•improved safety for vehicles
•improved pedestrian accessibility and safety
•reduced road user cost

The MOWT is committed to closing the transportation infrastructure gap by paving the way towards a sustainable future.
