We want to emphasize the importance of portion control and how using smaller plates can help reduce food waste. This is a practise that I have been doing at home and have seen how much of a difference it makes. It can also be done at restaurants as well.
By limiting our portion sizes, we can avoid overeating and wasting excess food.

What else can I do with food waste besides throwing it away?
We have a list of choices but we will share just a couple with you; compost and food donation
We are huge advocates of ugly and naked fruit and so we always encourage people to use them because they are still nutritious, they just didn’t make it to the restaurant or supermarket shelf.
But instead of soiling and dumping, those are 2 uses that we want to see more of. Through managing food waste, we enrich our soil, symbolically nurturing the roots of our communities while ensuring our traditions thrive and our local agriculture flourishes.

How does reducing food waste tie into ensuring food security in our Caribbean community?
When the newspapers released some of the statistics about our waste in Trinidad and Tobago (keep in mind the same is true for the Caribbean), we were not surprised that food/organic waste topped the list AGAIN.
But what really got us was when someone commented and said that knowing that we are throwing away all this food and she couldn’t afford to purchase good food to keep her children😢
