Paramin
by Renuka Maraj
From the plains of Waterloo to the towering heights of La Vigie
In maxi taxis we went
Most had never been
The anticipation was palpable
Camaraderie filled the air as we were driven through Chaguanas traffic, past yellow and pink poui trees round the Savannah and up narrow winding roads
Students and teachers chatted and laughed while old pop songs played softly in the background
Trinidadโs history came alive when we met our patois-speaking guide, Carlos
He spoke of the Spanish and French settlers and of African slaves
He reminded us to respect and protect nature and remember the variety of jobs they are in this world
At La Vigie the panoramic view was spectacular
Mountains, trees, corbeaux gliding, clouds nearby and of course below, the beautiful vast expanse of our azure Caribbean sea
At the lookout monarchs and elegant yellow swallowtail butterflies floated from bright orange lantana to red ixora
We enjoyed delicious pholourie, pastelle and homemade coconut ice cream
Then off to a very narrow path on a hillside of chives we went
Try not to look down was the name of the game as most of us gingerly made our way to a cave!
A few bats flew around as we were torn between listening attentively to Carlos and taking photos of rolling hills of green
It was a very hot day
Full of novelty and adventure
Tiring, yet remarkably invigorating.
Thanks very much..
