This little guy got caught in a fishing line, so we had to help him out.
•
The green sea turtle is one of the larger turtles in the family Cheloniidae and in the genus Chelonia it is the only known species. Like cows, they depend on bacteria in their guts to digest the food that they eat as they are herbivorous. The green sea turtles are therefore not dangerous to any other animal in the marine habitat. Although the lifespan of Chelonia mydas is not known, the turtles are known to weigh up to five hundred pounds. The males tend to have lengthy tails that are thick and the females usually have a shorter more stubby tail. The turtle lives in a shell which covers its back and belly. The part which covers its back is recognized as the carapace and it is usually covered with huge scales known as the scutes. The shell protecting the belly of the Chelonia mydas is called the plastron. The plastron and the carapace join at the sides of the turtle. This is called the lateral bridges. The space between the lateral bridges is where the tail, head and limbs are found. Unlike other turtles, the Chelonia mydas cannot retract their heads into the shell.

These boas are found in green rainforest type environments as well as mangroves and swamps. It is commonly seen in the mangrove trees at the Caroni Swamp in Trinidad. They can be found coiled up in trees, near open water and reservoirs where the trees are taller with stronger branches,
especially during the day as they are mostly nocturnal animals. Their diet consists of rodents,
birds and lizards. Tree boas can also be found in South American countries such
as Colombia and Venezuela.

The Caroni Swamp is an estuarine system comprising 5,611 hectares of mangrove forest and herbaceous marsh, interrupted by numerous channels, and brackish and saline lagoons, and with extensive intertidal mudflats on the seaward side. This swamp is an important wetland since it is ecologically diverse, consisting of marshes, mangrove swamp and tidal mudflats in close proximity. The wetland provides a variety of habitats for flora and faunal species and as such, supports a rich biodiversity. It is highly productive system that provides food and protection and is a nursery for marine and freshwater species.

Sometimes you can find your inner peace outside.

Edith Falls is located on an abandoned cocoa estate overlooking the Chaguaramas Public Golf Course (along the Macqueripe Road). An easy 30-minute nature hike takes you along a wide trail through a tonka bean plantation, red heliconias, bamboo clusters, fishtail palms, exotic rain forest as well as several tropical species of fauna, indigenous to Trinidad. Along the walk, you may even be lucky to spot a Red Howler Monkey in its natural habitat or an orange-winged parrot coming home to roost in the evening. The base of the waterfall is in an actual riverbed and to get close enough to see it, you must approach near the base which means climbing over some rocks, but it is certainly worth the effort. This is a three-level, 250-feet fall that is best viewed during the island’s rainy season. Otherwise it’s more like a trickle that produces a mist of water at the bottom.
