Where to perform tawaf?

The area where we perform tawaf is known as Mataf area. Mataf area is the area just around Kaaba. but if that place is crowded, you can perform tawaf on the first, second or third floors also.

You would see people performing tawaf, but you must understand the distance at the upper floors are longer compared to the ground floor.

You must not enter the haatim (semi circle area adjacent to kaaba) but you should walk around it, since haatim is a part of kaaba.

Tawaf is one of the easiest yet most significant rituals in Islam. It is an act of worship and a mandatory ritual for pilgrims who intend to perform Hajj and Umrah. Because it is a holy ritual, there are prerequisites associated with Tawaf.

Comprising seven rounds around the Holy Kaabah, a Tawaf starts at Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone) and ends at the same spot.

Maqam Ibrahim
(Station of Ibrahim)

In order to complete the upper part of the walls of the Kaaba, Ibrahim stood upon a large stone block which he moved along when each section was completed.

When the Kaaba was finished, the large stone block was left outside the Kaaba, close to the eastern wall of the sanctuary.

It became known as the Maqam Ibrahim (the station of Ibrahim).

Today, the Maqam Ibrahim, with the stone within, is located in front of the door of the Kaaba. The boulder is about 2 x 3 feet.

Where it stands today is the place where Ibrahim offered up his prayers.

There are many narrations which speak of the virtues of Hajj, including the following:

From Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, was asked which deed is best. He said: “Belief in Allaah and His Messenger.” He was asked: "Then what?" He said: “Jihaad for the sake of Allaah.” He was asked, then what? He said: “An accepted Hajj.” (Reported by Al-Bukhaari, 26; Muslim, 83).

An accepted Hajj means:

1. It must be paid for with Halaal (lawful) money

2. By doing Hajj; it should be purely and sincerely for the sake of Allaah.

3. One should not follow it with acts of disobedience and sin.

Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "I heard the Prophet , sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, say: 'Whoever does Hajj for the sake of Allaah and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), commit sin, or dispute unjustly during the Hajj, will come back like the day his mother gave birth to him.'" (Reported by Al-Bukhaari, 1449; Muslim, 1350)

There are three types of Hajj:

1. Tamattu
Umrah then Hajj
The pilgrim would first perform Umrah
Entering into Ihraam at the Meeqat with the Niyah for Umrah.
After performing Umrah the pilgrim must come out of the state of Ihraam
The pilgrim would then perform Hajj
Entering back into Ihraam with Niyah for Hajj on the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah
There are two separate Niyah’s (one for Umrah and then one for Hajj)
Animal sacrifice is compulsory
Pilgrim is called Mutammati

2. Qiran
Umrah and Hajj together (in one Niyah)
The pilgrim would first perform Umrah
Entering into Ihraam at the Meeqat with the Niyah for Umrah and Hajj
After performing Umrah the pilgrim must NOT come out of the state of Ihraam
The pilgrim would then perform Hajj
Animal sacrifice is compulsory
The pilgrim must have with them the animal for sacrifice

3. Ifrad

Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world gather annually in Mecca to perform Hajj – the sacred Muslim pilgrimage.

Hajj became obligatory for every able-bodied Muslim adult who has the financial means to do after Prophet Muhammad’s “farewell pilgrimage” in 632 AD.

According to Islamic tradition, the Kaaba – a black silk-clad stone structure at the heart of the Grand Mosque in Mecca – was built by the Prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael. Hajj is a spiritual, emotional and physical challenge that tests the patience and temperament of the pilgrim.

It occurs in Dhul-Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, between the eighth and 13th days of the month.
