Checheng railway in Shueili township, Nantou county

The emergence of Checheng can be traced back to the period of Japanese oppupation(1895-1945), when the Taiwan Sugar Corp. built a light railroad from Puli to Checheng in 1916. With the rise of the logging industry, in the 1960s Checheng developed into a major center of timber storage, processing, and shipping.
The sugar and logging industries declined and finally disappeared, and what is left is the historic allure of the logging operations and the railroad. This is the allure that has made Checheng a major tourist attraction today.
