Fort San Domingo: A Timeless Sentinel of Tamsui
Standing tall against the backdrop of Tamsui River, Fort San Domingo is a testament to Taiwan's rich and complex history. Originally built by the Spanish in 1628, this historic fortress has witnessed centuries of foreign rule, cultural exchanges, and political turmoil.
Named after Saint Dominic, the fort was initially a wooden structure designed to protect Spanish interests in the region. However, its ownership changed hands several times over the centuries. In 1642, the Dutch captured the fort and replaced the wooden structure with a more fortified stone one, known as "Hongmao Castle" (Fort of the Red Heads).
The British took control of the fort in 1867, making significant renovations and using it as a base for their diplomatic activities. Under British rule, the fort's architecture was influenced by European styles, blending elements of Spanish, Dutch, and British design.
Today, Fort San Domingo serves as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into Taiwan's colonial past. Explore the exhibits, learn about the fort's history, and imagine the bustling activity that once took place within its walls.
