Do you know, Taipei ranked 2nd best city for travel by Lonely Planet 2022? 🎉
----
Let's start from the ARCHITECTURE of Taipei.

Many first impressions of Taipei are dominated by boxy concrete structures, or the taller buildings and shopping malls of Xinyi District. However, as the former capital of the Japanese colonial government in Taiwan, Taipei enjoys a rich cultural inheritance of historic sites which hearken back to this era.

Although colonialism is never justified, the Japanese government did embark on ambitious development plans and built many sites which still stand today as reminders of Taiwan’s complex history and heritage. Among these are many wooden buildings — often dormitories or residences for officials, but also private buildings and other structures. Many of these were either used by the incoming Republic of China government after World War II, or left to the elements as that government attempted to erase the cultural memory of the Japanese era in Taiwan. Fortunately, in recent years, preservation efforts have brought many of these traditional architectural gems back to life for the public to enjoy.

Do you know, Taipei ranked 2nd best city for travel by Lonely Planet 2022 ? 🎊
----
Let's start from the FOOD of Taipei.

In Taiwan, people typically greet each other with “Tsiáh-pá-buē (食飽未)?” meaning “Have you eaten?”, marking the importance of having a good meal in Taiwanese culture. Rice is one of the most important food crops in Taiwan.

Compared to the old times, when Taiwanese people usually had rice with almost every meal, today, with industrial transformation and changes in eating habits, people living in the concrete jungle appear to be losing touch with rice. These urban dwellers rarely think about where the rice that they eat comes from. In an attempt to promote the myriad aspects of Taiwanese rice to people who live in urban areas, a small eatery sitting in the bustling center of Taipei has been established.

“Taiwan Rice Dining Hall (泔米食堂)” , The founder Wilma Ku (顧瑋) and her team have long been investing both time and effort into discovering quality local ingredients and set up this restaurant providing an opportunity for people in Taipei to taste different varieties of Taiwanese rice and produce.

Check out her story for more details of the FOOD in Taipei!

Do you know, Taipei ranked 2nd best city for travel by Lonely Planet 2022 ? 🎉
----
Let's start from the Nature of Taipei.

Taipei’s ringing mountains mean great swathes of trail-intersected low, mid, and even high-altitude green walks within a quick jaunt from the central core. In this article, however, our destination is a trio of large, popular greenspaces right in the core itself that provide you with a breath of fresh “green” air. Each is a splendid getaway-in-the-city perfect for chilling and relaxing — in autumn and all other seasons, too. Are you ready for the visit to these oases in the heart of Taipei?

Time to Cruisin'In KAOHSIUNG !

Not long ago, Kaohsiung wasn’t really on the international travel map. Sure, people in Taiwan knew it was a pretty relaxed city, but most international travelers visiting Taiwan chose the bright lights of Taipei, the majesty of Hualien, the history of Tainan or the scenery of Taitung over the arguably more subtle charms of southern Taiwan’s largest city.

Slowly but surely, this has been changing, and Kaohsiung is working hard (but in a relaxed way, because unlike Taipei, Kaohsiung is a relaxed town) to open itself up to the international travel set. Kaohsiung’s efforts have not gone unnoticed – in 2018, venerable travel giant Lonely Planet put the city on its annual Top Ten Must Visit Cities list, putting Kaohsiung firmly on the international travel map.

Check out the video and share with us which places you have been before!

A Guided Book to Taitung #6

Keep driving along the coastline, the Fushan Fisheries Resources Conservation Area can be your stopover to walk down the yellow sandy beach, and feel the waves patting on the foot. The Fushan Fisheries Resources Conservation Area was established more than 10 years ago, in response to overfishing in the nearby waters.

In the past, the ecology of the local waters was at great risk due to overfishing. The livelihood of the local fishermen, as well as the area's value for tourists, were both at stake. In 2005, the area was deemed a no fishing zone announced by government. Despite some protests from local fishermen, the area remained a no fishing zone and marine life in the local habitat have seen a steady increase year on year.

Nowadays, Fushan Fisheries Resources Conservation Area provide ecological tour, introducing many of the local sea creatures, plants, history, and ecology of this beautiful seaside area along Taitung's east coast.

A Guided Book to Taitung #5

Do you know where to find the Marlin in Taiwan?

As the largest fisher harbor placed in eastern coast established during Japanese era, Chenggong fisher market is well-known for Marlin and Mahi-mahi fish, it is worth mentioning that the fishermen here still use harpoons and dart fish, showing the power and beauty of the seamen, which can be said to be one of the characteristics of Chenggong fishing port, attract tourists to experience the vitality of the local fishing market and its unique fish auction culture.

And what’s more to visit in Chenggong township, the former residence of Sugamiya Katsutaro is a sight to behold. Located next to the Xingang Church, it is a two stories Japanese traditional building which only existed in Southern Taiwan, originally served as the residence of Mr. Sugamiya Katsutaro, the chief architect and planner of the Xingang Fishing Port. But after suffering extensive damage during recent typhoons, the historical building has been under renovation since 2019, with funding from the Ministry of Culture. Expected to be complete next year, the restored wooden building will once again become the cultural heart of Xingang.

Have you been to Kaohsiung?

Kaohsiung is a city that leaves an impression, from its sprawling flea markets to garish temples to notoriously reckless drivers. Hamasen, the historic urban area by Kaohsiung Port, in particular is full of wonderful things to do. Developed during the Japanese colonial period, this historically affluent district was once the city’s financial center and one of Taiwan’s first tourist destinations for cruise ships, drawing in hundreds of thousands of wealthy tourists at the turn of the century.

Thankfully, this nostalgic corner hasn’t succumbed to overdevelopment. And with many of its Japanese-era buildings recently restored, now is a great time to visit. Here is our guide on what to do in Hamasen, from boutiques to beaches, come check it out and tell us what do you wanna do the most in this Harbor city!

Share your favorite photos of Kaohsiung with us!

Who here is a fan of architecture? I'm definitely adding this place to my bucket list!

These amazing 7-storey twin towers in Kaoshuing, Taiwan are called the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. The entrance is at the mouth of the dragon and the exit, the mouth of the tiger.

According to Taiwanese folk legend, entering the mouth of the dragon and exiting the mouth of the tiger symbolizes turning bad luck into good fortune! Also, word has it that the lucky few who get to climb to the top of the towers become witnesses to a breath-taking view!

Anyone want to travel with me to this place to turn bad luck to good fortune? 🐉🐅🇹🇼

A Guided Book to Taitung #4

Along with coastal highway 11, as we are closer to the Pacific Ocean, SUP (Stand Up Paddling) may be your option to spend the time in Summer. 🙂

SUP is a board sport combining principles of both surfing and sailing. You can sit, kneel, stand or relax on your paddle board however you may like, there are a lot of different way you can enjoy on the paddle board, reading, sleeping, doing yoga or even having a picnic.

Start from the beautiful Mawuku river estuary placed at Donhe township, after a basic teaching lesson by the instructor, you can easily row paddle boarding by learning forward and backward, right turn and left turn. The paddling route will pass the old and new Donghe bridge upstream along the way with nearly 2 kilometers journey, the river will get narrower until you reach to the white rocky area, people called it here "The little Iceland".

Mawuku river is an important stream that nourishes the Amis people, The turquoise water and the surrounding dense grove present a verdant view, with the clear blue seascape of the Pacific Ocean behind, with its calm river surface, SUP in Mawuku river is definitely a fun sport experience for all different age, it is safe for children, and even for pets.

Kaiana Bunun Dining and Cultural Workshop

Kaiana means "hanging" in the Bunun language. The workshop originally focused on handicrafts, but gradually switched over to promote Bunun millet culture after seeing the traditional Bunun staple food - Millet, was disappearing from local dinner tables.

Millet has been an important role in the traditional ceremonies of the Bunun people for hundred years, the disappearance of millet would be a catastrophic blow to Bunun culture. Ibu, the Bunun girl who follows her father's dream, start from zero, learning millet culture as well as making the sacred grain. After practicing for over a year, she successfully brought the traditional taste back, made all the elders remind of their sweet childhood.

Blessed from the elders of the village, Ibu strived to preserve the precious millet culture through cooking and sharing the special millet meals with the world, and I would say, Kaiana's signature millet set meal is a testimony to her conviction, and not only the meals itself, the nature decoration surrounded definitely improved the level of taste.

Are you an OUTDOOR person? Have you tried river tracing in Taiwan?
-
As subtropical/tropical mountainous island with abundant rainfall, Taiwan is absolutely a wonderful playground for outdoors enthusiasts. One of the best ways to spend time and embrace the nature here is following a mountain stream uphill, climbing the rock and meet a magnificent and breathtaking waterfall in the end, swimming in the river and feel the cool summer as the highlight of your adventure outing !

And now, here we are in Wuling village in Taitung, you have more options to go if you wanna try RIVER TRACING next time in eastern Taiwan!

The village of Buklavu still uses the irrigation system introduced during the Japanese occupation period. Redirecting water from the Luliao river for agricultural purposes, the crystal clear upper reaches of the Luliao river are full of diverse flora and fauna,
and also serve as the traditional hunting grounds of the tribe’s hunters.

Today, leading by the indigenous Bunun hunters, we trekked along the Luliao River to a secluded valley in Salinhaul , which is a
traditional hunting ground of the local Bunun tribe. With its clear streams and majestic rock formations, a brisk 30 minute trek into the valley led us into a deep blue pool next to a lofty waterfall.

What amazed me in the end, it was not only the river tracing experience, the otherworldly sounds of the Bunun eight part polyphony came from our leader and hunters, echoing around the valley while we enjoyed the river.

And suddenly, there is a calm force floating up from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you Taitung!

The owner of this bar, bartender Little T, who grew up in southern Taiwan in the 1980s and 1990s, began his career as a teenager, joining the catering industry right after graduating from high school. At the age of 28, Little T decided to move to Taipei, seeking greater challenges in the bartending industry. After almost 15 years, Little T was inspired to start his own business. And with continued internationalization, Little T won the championship of Diageo World Class in 2011 and became well known in the Taiwanese bartending scene.

Having worked in both the north and south of Taiwan, Little T is a witness to the development of bartending in the country and nowadays he even pairs complexity with simplicity and embraces innovation and the classics equally.

Check out the story of little T of how he made and learn to make your own glass of distinct Taiwanese flavors at home!

Taiwan Trivia #3
-
In Taiwan, you might hear about Taipei (north of Taiwan), Taichung (middle of Taiwan), Tainan (south of Taiwan) and Taitung (east of Taiwan) as they are all the counties name, but have you heard about Taixi (west of Taiwan)?

Probably NOT, but why?

In the past, Taiwanese people are superstitious, they think the pronunciation in Taixi sounds like "Killing" in Taiwanese language, as well as the pronunciation of "XI" sounds like "Dead" in Taiwanese language, as both words consider negative, hence there is no any county named of "Taixi".

But actually, if you look into the map of Taiwan carefully, there is really a small township named "Taixi" (台西鄉), it is a rural township in Yunlin County, lying to the west coast of Taiwan and famous for its oyster farming. :)

A time for family : Moon Festival 🌕

In Taiwan, the Moon Festival, also known as Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節), falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar.

While its origins are agricultural — the Moon Festival is an important harvest celebration — nowadays, the most predominant aspect of the holiday is family reunion; in particular gathering for a big family dinner. Sometimes referred to as Reunion Festival, the celebration falls on this specific date, for it is guaranteed that the moon will be at its largest, shining down on families while they eat and enjoy each other’s company, because a big, round moon symbolizes family unity and togetherness.

Check those various tales associated with the Moon Festival that have been passed down over the generations and tell us which one you believe the most! 😃

Have you heard of SWING dance? The other way to spend your night in Taipei! 🕺
The piano bounces out a ragtime melody as Wade Lin (林漢威) walks us through the basics of the Charleston (查爾斯頓舞), his leather brogues twisting left and right as he steps to the lively downbeats.

“Whether they’re doing the Charleston, the Lindy Hop (林迪舞), Balboa, or West Coast Swing, every swing dancer has their own personality when they start moving. That’s what I love the most about it,” he says.

“One of the most important things is that the Taipei scene is very welcoming. No one judges you for your dancing ability,” he explains. No previous dancing experience is required to join Swing Taiwan’s classes or to attend the social dance events. The company also teaches bilingually, and about 10 percent of the students are international. It’s a great way for visitors to get to know local Taiwanese people.

Listen to Wade Lin's amazing story of how he created a social Dance Culture in Taipei !

Attention! Here comes a POP QUIZ 🎉
Do you know there’s A way that ice hockey is played in the hot and steamy subtropical island of Taiwan?
-
YES IT IS!
-
There is a thriving ice-hockey scene here, based in Taipei. Dominated by players from overseas 20 years ago, today expat players are very much in the minority. The expat-player community is open and welcoming, not concerned with your level of skill, and because of today’s social media connections is constantly welcoming expat newbies who’ve made contact with the community prior to their big move from abroad. They arrive with equipment in hand, and are on the ice making new friends within a few days, helping them more easily settle into Taiwan life.

Let's welcome Rick Charette, the Canadian editorial consultant, translator, and professional writer, gives you a capsule history of hockey in Taiwan, the key elements of today’s expat-community hockey scene, and help with how to become part of it (Of course if you are interested.)

Muslims in Taipei.
-
With the large number of migrant workers from Southeast Asia coming to Taiwan in recent years, the Muslim community has become another highlight of the cultural landscape. From feeling unfamiliar and slowly developing curiosity about foreign cultures to gradually understanding the Islamic way of life, Tony Thamsir (譚雲福), a Chinese Indonesian who grew up in Indonesia, believes that Taiwan’s pluralistic and tolerant nature not only makes Muslim friends who come to live or work here feel comfortable and welcome, but also enriches their own cultural breadth.
Read the story of Tony, who initially did not fully empathize with this community at the beginning, until he was hired as a foreign labor counselor at the Taipei City Labor Bureau that he was able to gradually open his heart in the process of helping those who sought help.

My name is Tomas from Argentina. I arrived in Taiwan 4 years ago.
What I love about Taiwan is its freedom.
Freedom to walk feeling safe, freedom to go from one place to another in a simple and convenient way. The freedom you feel to travel and meet different places all around.

When my friends and my family came to visit me. 15 of us traveling around Taiwan, from south to north, letting them discover my second home.
It was just amazing to host them in here that I talked a lot about, but until they came here, they couldn’t imagine much about. Lot of great memories travelling to Alishan, Sun moon lake, Turtle Island and more. Taiwan makes us feel that we are very welcome to visit and live in this country. People here respect each other, help you if you need something. They are curious about where you come from and what are you doing here.

Taiwan is a treasure hard to find in the world. And when I say it is a treasure, its also because the western world does not know much about Taiwan. And that makes this country even more amazing. 🙂

Thank you Taiwan.

🌞 Let's hold on the tails of summer and welcome —the flower sea of Orange daylily ☀
If you ask what is the best to see in eastern Taiwan right now, it's show time for Orange daylily! Sixty Stone (Liushidan) Mountain (六十石山) overlooks the rift-valley floor, its peak about 800 meters above sea level. A 300/400-hectare tableland of daylilies carpets its top, blooming in spectacular fashion August~September, with the paddy-grid far below a unique backdrop.
And where else to find Orange Daylily?
▪️ Chike Mountain (赤科山), northeast of Yuli, Hualien
▪️ Taimali Mountain (太麻里山), Taitung
Don't miss the chance to visit these places in person!
