◎About National Taiwan Museum◎

The Museum, the oldest in Taiwan, was established in 1908. In 1915, construction of the Museum’s new home was completed in an elegant and classical style, making the Museum one of the most noteworthy public buildings by the Japanese colonial government. In 1999, the Museum underwent a new christening as the “National Taiwan Museum.” Although its name has changed, th

e Museum is the only museum built in Japanese colonial era that, after wars and changes in government, remains open at its original site. Witnessing the history of Taiwan and withstanding the warfare and time, the building itself is an indispensable piece of urban heritage and was designated as a National Historic Site. The tour will disclose the secret details about the Museum building that bring the story of the modernization in Taiwan. Although the Museum was founded as a natural history museum, it holds some important historical treasures in its collection, for example, the Yellow Tiger Flag (the flag of the Formosan Republic), which will also be introduced in the tour. The Museum is working with the Ministry of Culture to create a museum complex incorporating historic sites and buildings at the core of Taipei City, with “Taiwan” as the unifying theme. And the tour will lead the audience exploring under the theme.

---------------------------------
◎About the multilingual tour service in National Taiwan Museum◎

Staring from April, National Taiwan Museum will provide free English tours every Sunday afternoon and weekend tours in various Asian or European Languages to share the interesting stories behind it with the world. The multilingual tour service started a year ago firstly with Southeast Asian languages as a part of the “New Immigrant Plan”, in which the Museum recruits residents from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia and Myanmar introducing the Museum to the new immigrants in their languages. Recently, the cooperation between the Museum and the universities has been intensified, and therefore more and more students become interested in the history and development of Taiwan before WWII. This spring, the Museum has recruited a group of enthusiastic local and international students to the “International Docent Program”, and trained them with the knowledge of Taiwanese history and tour techniques. The aim of this program is to provide not only a more friendly visiting environment but also an in-depth travel experience for every visitors.

"Museum Sports Day in *Potehi* Taiwanese Puppetry"🏃‍♂️🏃🏃‍♀️

*Potehi*, Taiwanese glove puppetry, is considered one of the most symbolic performing arts of Taiwan. Visitors may even see the PILI Potehi puppets at Taoyuan Airport. It was initially brought to Taiwan around the 17th century by various Potehi puppeteers from Southeast China. With the changes in Taiwan's society, Potehi also developed different genres in terms of the performance space, plots, effects, size, and style of the puppets...
國立臺灣博物館 National Taiwan Museum (NTM), with donations from 西田社(Seden Society Puppet Theater) and the puppetry scholar Dr. Lin Chin-Fu, became the largest collector of puppetry art in Taiwan. To enhance the public's understanding of Potehi puppetry art, NTM is collaborating with 台北偶戲館 Puppetry Art Center of Taipei (PACT) in a special English-guided tour event.
Join us on this brief yet fascinating journey to explore the Potehi culture of Taiwan! You will be introduced to the history of Potehi in Taiwan, the secrets to storing Potehi puppets in the Museum, and the fundamental tricks to performing Potehi. What's more, you will have the chance to compete with other participants in a dash race inside the Museum-- with the Potehi puppets in your hand!

After some failures of uploading videos, here’s the seminar presentation from Group 5🖐️

▪️Title

Japanese influences on religions in Taiwan

▪️Abstract

Taiwan is known for its diversity in culture, history, languages, and religion. As a country that is tolerant in the practice of all forms of religion, it is interesting to see how the differing historical and cultural backgrounds all contribute to the religious landscape. However, religious freedom was not always something that the Taiwanese had. In looking in Taiwan during the occupation of the Japanese, our group seeks to look into the religious landscape that was present at the time. In particular, we will explore how the different stances that the Japanese had in relation to the practice of religion and how this changed over time. In addition, we also wish to show how body parties are able to simultaneously influence each other and it is not solely Japan changing the religious views of the Taiwanese.

Today is King's Day for the Dutch people!
Our Dutch docent, Rinske, would like to introduce the King's Day:
King's Day is the day we celebrate the king's birthday since the Netherlands is a monarchy. It used to be Queen's Day (celebrated April 30th), as before 2014, we had a queen who abdicated on Queen's Day 2013. It's an official holiday, so everyone gets a day off. The royal family usually pays a visit to a different city every king's day, which tends to be accompanied by a parade and performances from local groups.
We have a longstanding tradition of having a fleamarket in every town (and multiple in the bigger cities). Additionally, we like to celebrate with sweets such as tompoezen or oranjebollen, and it's often an excuse for a big family get-together.

Don't miss our next Dutch tour on 14 May Sunday afternoon!🇧🇶

Minutes of the Docent Training Program 📸

We have completed most of the lectures for the new batch of docent trainees during the 228 Memorial Holiday. Let's see the feedback from our students:

🗣"I was very intrigued by the design of the bull-eye window inside the museum. As a Taiwanese, I was amazed by the exterior design of the museum's architecture, which was heavily influenced by European culture. However, I always hoped to see some elements of Taiwan's culture featured within the design. Therefore, it certainly felt like a breath of fresh air to see the bull-eye window featuring fruits from Taiwan. In fact, I would never be able to notice the fruits if I were visiting the museum on my own, as it was so detailed and hidden. Hence, I was definitely astonished by this detail, making it the most memorable moment during yesterday's training day." ---David🙆‍♂️

🗣"I remember the guides were very enthusiastic about giving us the tours. They are very knowledgeable about aspects of the park and the museum buildings that I think most visitors never will get to know about. The stories of the 2/28 incident and the Japanese use of comfort women were both interesting and incredibly sad to listen to. But as the guides pointed out, they are important but unpleasant parts of history that should not be forgotten. I feel like I've learned a lot about Taiwan's history and culture and that is without actually going to any of the exhibitions in the museum. This was just the history of the museum buildings and the park, yet they contained so much information about Taiwan's history. "---Klas🙋‍♂️

🗣"... Before yesterday, I frequently passed by the 228 Memorial Park but never did I further research the implied meaning behind the cubes and the falls at the outer circumference, or more so, I've never made an effort to take it slow, observe the surroundings and understand further deep down what the artist was trying to convey. There was also an arch commemorating a woman. Iagos also told us about comfort women during Japanese colonization and later the nationalist government. Sidenote: he recommended a movie made in Kinmen elaborating on the female although he claimed it to inaccurately portray comfort women. Above all, as a Taiwanese high school student, I am amazed that foreigners here for academic studies care about my nation's history often more than I do. (a bit ashamed)"---Yunnie💁‍♀️

🗣"What struck me the most was the concentration of heritage in this one particular park over a very long period. We can see relics associated with the Qing dynasty, such as the two memorial arches and the little stumps that actually remain of the Tianhou temple/Goddess temple, but also, of course, traces of the Japanese colonial period, which brought a rich diversity of styles to the park, including traditional Japanese elements such as the lantern and the moon bridge, but also less 'Japanese looking' heritage in the architecture of the two museums. Interestingly, many modern elements are disguised as classical features. The pond with the traditional style Chinese pavilions was added much later by the KMT government to drive away the homeless, which is a wonderfully poetic example of how nationalist rhetoric can be used to exclude large sections of society."---Rinske🧏‍♀️

The training and every walking tour we gave were like rituals to open your eyes to the complexity and nuances of the places we live and pass by. From then on, Taiwan would never look the same!💛

Our Program members are preparing for their Day 3 training event: seminar presentations on the Walled City cultural heritage and contemporary issues:
