Guishan Island Adventure
Guishan Island, located off the coast of Toucheng Township in Yilan County, Taiwan, stands as the easternmost gem of the island. Its name, “Guishan Island,” derives from its turtle-shaped appearance, earning it the affectionate moniker of the ‘Turtle Island.’
Volcanic Geology
Over the past 7,000 years, Guishan Island has played host to at least four volcanic eruptions, sculpting the island into its present-day form.
Turtle Tail’s Dance with the Seasonal Breeze
One of Guishan Island’s star attractions is the Turtle Tail, a pebble beach that transforms with the seasons. In winter, influenced by the northeast monsoon, the Turtle Tail leans eastward, revealing more sandy shores. Come summer, under the sway of the southwestern monsoon, it tilts westward, unveiling more rocky landscapes.
Local Weather Predictions with Guishan Island
Locals in Yilan have a saying, ‘Guishan wearing a hat, brace for a watery welcome.’ They use the cloud formations around Guishan Island to predict weather changes, believing that when the island is veiled in clouds, rain is on the horizon.
401 Highland
Perched atop Guishan Island’s Turtle Shell, at an elevation of 398 meters, is the majestic 401 Highland – the island’s highest observation deck. From here, one can take in the panoramic views of Guishan Island and the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
To ascend 401 Highland, brace yourself for a stairway extravaganza – 1,706 steps over a 1.4-kilometer stretch. Safety first, my friends!
