The massive statue of Ramesses II at Memphis, Egypt, is one of the most iconic relics of ancient Egyptian civilization, dating back to the 13th century BCE during the reign of the powerful pharaoh. Originally standing at over 10 meters (33 feet) tall, the limestone statue was part of a grand display of Ramesses II’s power and divine status. It was discovered in the 1820s, broken in two pieces, and eventually transported to an open-air museum near the ancient city of Memphis. The statue’s craftsmanship exemplifies the grandeur of Ramesses II's reign, marked by monumental construction projects throughout Egypt. Today, the statue lies in a prone position due to its size and fragility, but it remains a popular tourist attraction and an important symbol of Egypt’s rich heritage.

The Bull Jumping Tribe of Ethiopia

The Hamar tribe of Ethiopia has a unique initiation ritual that involves bull jumping. It is still practiced today. This tribe occupies the southwestern region of Ethiopia. They are mostly pastoralists and we doubt if cattle are valued in northern Nigeria the way it is amongst the Hamar tribe. To this effect, it’s not strange to see both men and women of the tribe carrying AK47s as weapons to be used against cattle rustlers. Don’t play rough play around their cattle cause they don't like what they hate.😏 Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Till today, few of them have attended school.

Let’s get down to business now; different ethnic groups in Africa have different methods of initiating boys into manhood. For the Hamar community, it involves bull jumping. The three-day long rite of passage is quite important to the initiates and their families. The timing of the ceremony is determined by the man’s parents, which is usually after harvest. The initiate is shaved to the middle of his head by a group of men known as the Maza (maza also means 'men' in Hausa language, yes?🤔). Wethinks the hairstyle for the initiates is the Gallas style. He is then rubbed with sand to wash away his sins (oh, you read that right) and smeared with dung for strength. The strips from tree barks are then strapped round his chest. This serves as spiritual protection. Any words to describe how you feel right now? 🙄

The initiate is expected to cross over 15 castrated bulls that have been rubbed with dung to make their backs slippery. Are they for or against the initiates😕? Failure to successfully walk over the bulls, brings shame to the initiate and his family. Won’t we just pick shame laidis🤨? The initiate would then have to wait till the following year. But if the initiate succeeds, he is set to get married to a girl his family chooses for him, have children and cattle. Is marriage a worthy prize though? The initiate must leap over the backs of the bulls not

Fly Camping
Fly Camping involve setting up small camps for a night under the stars, more often than not in a remote part of the bush. Fly camps are the ideal end to a day’s walking safaris or game drive, with many unexpected comfort- a canvas washbasin with the hot water, fresh towel, hurricane lamps and delicious food cooked on the fire. At night, the sensation of sleeping in a light tents or just under mosquito net, as the moon shines down and the noises of the African night begin, is the highlight of any safari holiday.
