While ostriches are notable for being the heaviest living birds, they are also the fastest birds on land with the ability to reach speeds of up to 70km/h. They also lay the largest eggs known to any living land animal. They are farmed worldwide, particularly for their feathers as they are used as decoration and feather dusters. Travel with FOHUSO Community Travel to see Africa’s flightless birds run wild on the open savannah of the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater

The Hippo is the third largest land mammal after the elephant and the rhinoceros. Hippos inhabit rivers, lakes, and mangrove swamps, across sub-Saharan Africa. Territorial males preside over a stretch of river with groups of five to thirty females and young hippos. Due to their delicate skin, they spend days cooling in the water or mud and emerge at dusk to graze on grasses. For security purposes, they are social while in the water, but solitary during their grazing activities. The hippo’s highly aggressive and unpredictable nature makes them the world’s deadliest mammal after human beings, with an estimated kill of 500 people every year across Africa. They are threatened by habitat loss and poaching for their meat and ivory canine teeth.

In Mid-January to March the Great Migration heads south of the Serengeti and to Ndutu Region for the Serengeti’s greatest spectacle, the wildebeest calving season. On the lush green pastures, a million wildebeests give birth to 8000 calves every day, that’s about 334 calves every hour. New life on the “Endless Plains” does not go unnoticed, it attracts attention from lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas. Although some would meet an unfortunate end before they grow, most will live long enough to make several round trips to this very expanse to feed and breed.

Predation is vital for maintaining balance, and survival in nature. On the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, predators keep the Great Migration’s numbers in check while sustaining cohabitation. In crossing of the Mara River some unfortunate few are devoured by hungry Nile Crocs, while on the savannah and woodlands mighty hunters such as the leopard, lion, cheetah and the African Wild Dogs lie in wait. The calving season of mid-January to March in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region is especially brutal to weak calves who fall prey to predators and the unforgiving nature of the Serengeti.

Kikuletwa Hotsprings or otherwise known as Maji Moto by the locals, is an oasis amidst Northern Tanzania’s savannah on foot of Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is a captivating, geothermal crystal-clear water spring surrounded by dense vegetation. The Garra rufa is common in these waters, providing therapeutic skincare to all who swim in these beautiful rejuvenating waters.
It is the perfect place to visit after a safari adventure or after a long and hard trek to Mt. Kilimanjaro summit.
