Most male lions grow impressive manes the older they get. These manes grow up to 16cm long and are a sign of dominance. However, not all male lions have manes. ‚Maneless‘ male lions are common in parts of Africa, such as Arusha and mikumi national park in Tanzania

Why the zebra has its stripes is a question biologists have been puzzling over more than a century now. Many theories have been proposed for the purpose of their iconic black and white stripes: camouflage, predator confusion, social recognition, thermoregulation. The most promising theory though is that of protection from biting flies. Experiments placed zebras and uniformly colored horses in similar enclosures, and though the flies circled and touched at similar rates, they landed on the horses far more often. When the horses were placed in striped coats, the flies landed less often. Despite living in areas of high fly activity zebras are not commonly targeted by these species, allowing them to avoid injury and diseases spread by these insects.

Cheetah hunt in the daytime, generally in the early morning or late afternoon. They climb a termite mound or small hill and use their sharp vision to locate prey, then it’s off to the races. The cheetah uses its lightning speed to go careening after its dinner, knocking the prey to the ground and then latching on to its throat. They tend to eat their prey right away to avoid losing it to competitors.

Cheetahs have distinctive dark tear-mark lines that run from the corners of their eyes down to their mouth. These marks deflect the sun, making it easier for the cats to hunt during the day. Without the sun’s glare, they’re able to zero in on their targets, according to the Cheetah Conservation Fund.

Fun facts about the banded mongoose

Banded mongoose can be seen eating ticks off warthogs. This is known as a ‘symbiotic relationship’ as both animals get something out of it. The warthogs get cleaned and the mongoose gets to eat.
Once the pups are old enough to look for food themselves they are individually cared for by an es**rt. This es**rt teaches the pup how to forage and also keeps them safe.

Nutrition and Nurture

As mammals, zebras suckle from their mothers. Most zebras are fully weaned between 7 and 11 months of age, but the mother continues to lactate for up to 16 months after giving birth. Zebras are herbivores, dining on grasses, shrubs, leaves, herbs and other plant material. Foals begin grazing when they are 1 week old. As the foal follows his mother closely throughout his first year, he observes which flora to consume. The foal also learns the herd’s migratory route to navigate between the cyclical dry and rainy seasons, as well as the invaluable lesson of keeping a watch for predators.

A zebra is born with camouflage stripes, immediate mobility and a mother’s lessons of survival skills. Despite these benefits, predation and extinction loom. More than ever, the birth of a baby zebra is something to marvel at and celebrate, given the fact that two of the three species of zebra are presently listed as endangered species.

Kori bustard (Ardeotis kori) is the largest flying bird native to Africa. It is a member of the bustard family, which all belong to the order Otidiformes and are restricted in distribution to the Old World. It is one of the four species (ranging from Africa to India to Australia) in the large-bodied genus Ardeotis. In fact, the male kori bustard may be the heaviest living animal capable of flight.
