‘Tiny, adorable and timid’ are names given to the dik-dik, an antelope specie native to the grasslands of eastern and southern Africa. The dik-dik, though regarded as ‘chicken’ for predators isn’t as easy pickings as the chicken, having been gifted three excellent traits.

1. excellent eye sight
2. ability to reach speeds of 42km/h.
3? When alarmed, dik-diks run in a zigzag pattern to confuse their pursuers and make an alarm call that sounds like "dik dik" by whistling through their noses. This shrill sound alerts other dik-diks, as well as larger animals, of nearby danger. Reason why they get their name, and why their noses are how they are.

Lake Ngosi, Africa's second largest crater lake can be found near Tukuyu, a small town in the highland Rungwe District, Mbeya Region, of southern Tanzania in East Africa.

The Nyakusa people, an ethnic group living in southern Tanzania holds a number of local myths and folk tales which surround the volcanic lake, and the surrounding area. One of the most common one is a group of Colonial German soldiers who disposed of treasure into the waters of the lake and placed a spell on the Lake to protect the gold and hamper any other persons' efforts to reclaim it, others claiming that there is a twelve headed snake that protects the treasure coming out to the surface on sunny days.

The common warthog, a wild member of the pig family abundantly found in almost all parks and game reserves in Tanzania, is not to be mistaken with the desert warthog that isn't found in Tanzania but its northern neighbouring East African countries. (Can be differentiated with presence of teeth inside their "weird-looking" mouths)

The wild pig can run up to 50 km per hour when threatened and quite often when you see "pumbaa" in the wild, it will either be running away with its tail straight up or grazing.

The giraffe is Tanzania's national animal and the tallest mammal on earth.

2. Has blue blood,
3. Is vital to keeping the eco-system in balance,
4. Has legs taller than most humans causing the giant to drink and give birth standing up

5. And only needing 5 to 30 minutes of sleep in a 24 hour period?

Now a common flowering houseplants, all thanks to Baron Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire, the smallest of the African Violet species Saintpaulia pusilla is in fact, a very rare thing—it is one of the rarest flowers in the world.

Originated from the Udzungwa Mountains of south central Tanzania, the flowers are believed to have a spiritual aspect to it (power of forgiveness) together with a myth that the plant will not bloom unless they see the sky.

CAPTION: a pangolin in tears, Chief Merere II of the Sangu tribe.

FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE PANGOLIN:

8. The Sangu tribe, residing in the Usanga plains in Tanzania's eastern Rift Valley, holds a special belief in the pangolin as part of its cosmology.

The story:
All pangolins are believed to have fallen to earth from the sky, where the Sangu's ancestors reside.

The discovery of a pangolin sets in motion a series of ceremonies involving the founder of the pangolin, the chief and the rest of his tribe.
Should the pangolin be seen to shed tears during any of this, it's regarded as an omen of good rains for the coming year.

Despite its heavenly origins things dont end well for the unfortunate animal. The final ritual involves it being buried alive along with a newly slaughtered sheep in a sacrifice to the ancestors.

FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE EAST AFRICAN PANGOLIN:

2. Pangolins have no teeth. Instead, they use their wormlike sticky tongue which can extend up to 25 centimeters (10 inches) in length in large species to consume 140 to 200g (4.9 to 7.1 oz) of insects per day -up to 70 million a year! Ants and termites falling under the mammal's most tasty dish.

ANIMALS OF TANZANIA:

FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE EAST AFRICAN PANGOLIN:

1. The word 'pangolin' comes from the Malay word 'penggulung' meaning "roller." Refering to the defensive stance -rolling into a ball- the pangolin uses when it feels threatened.

Additional:
However, such defensive efforts do little to deter poachers who simply pick them up like a dragon's egg and put them in a bag. Although the pangolin also has another trick in it's sleeve. They have an ability to emit a putrid fluid 😖from their a**l glands to ward off attackers.
