The Iraqw Tribe near Ngorongoro
Historically, the Iraqw are skilled farmers, cultivating crops like maize, wheat, and millet, and they also practice livestock herding. They are noted for their terraced farms and complex irrigation systems, which have enabled sustainable agriculture in the region’s challenging terrain. The Iraqw have a unique style of traditional housing, often semi-subterranean, which offers insulation from the highland climate.
Culturally, the Iraqw are known for their oral traditions, music, and dance. Their social structure often involves age-based hierarchies, and elders play a central role in decision-making. While many Iraqw have adopted Christianity or Islam, they also maintain traditional practices, blending indigenous beliefs with newer religions.

While hippos are generally too large and powerful for lions to hunt, there are rare instances where lions, usually in a group, might attempt to attack a hippo. This typically happens when the hippo is vulnerable, such as when it is young, injured, or away from water where it feels safer. Adult hippos are extremely aggressive and have massive jaws capable of inflicting severe damage, making them formidable adversaries even for a pride of lions.
In most cases, lions prefer smaller and less dangerous prey.

Highlight of the Serengeti National Park-Northern region (mara river crossing)
The wildebeest migration is one of the most spectacular natural events in the Serengeti ecosystem. Each year, over a million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and other herbivores, migrate in search of fresh grazing and water. This cyclical movement between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya is driven by seasonal rains and is known for its dramatic river crossings, where crocodiles lie in wait. It’s a prime example of nature’s raw beauty and is a major highlight for visitors to the Serengeti.

The wildebeest migration in the Northern Serengeti is one of the most spectacular natural events on Earth. It typically occurs between July and October, when over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, move from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya in search of fresh grazing.

The Hadzabe and Datoga are two tribes that reside near Lake Eyasi in Tanzania. The Hadzabe are considered to be the last hunter-gatherers in East Africa and they live a lifestyle similar to our ancestors in the Stone Age. They hunt with bow and arrow and gather fruits, roots, and honey from baobab trees. On the other hand, the Datoga are pastoralists and skilled blacksmiths who make everyday objects such as arrowheads and knives from scrap metal. Both tribes offer a unique cultural experience for visitors to Lake Eyasi.
