Natron 100 is a music festival held at Lake Natron Camp. It features East African artists & there were groups from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

Not only does the festival promote musical talent but money is raised for local community projects . The clinic that is featured is situated on the airstrip so that when the Flying Doctor comes in medical attention that was given to patients outside under the wing of the plane can now be done in the purpose built clinic that Natron camp had built in Arusha and delivered to Natron. The privacy and improved environment provided clearly makes the work of the flying doctor easier but also is a boon for women patients.

Hoopoe is proud to be part of this effort as a sponsor.

Hoopoe Safaris is one of the founder members of this incredibly successful and important initiative.

Tanzania tour operators contribute $211,000 to save wildlife.

Operators have so far poured more than $211,000 into a Serengeti de-snaring program meant to combat a new form of poaching.
In 2017, a handful of tour operators, the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), and Serengeti National Park (SENAPA) joined forces to fight against this silent and deadly form of poaching in the Serengeti.
The De-snaring Program, the first of its kind, has the objective of removing the widespread snares set by local bush meat mongers to catch massive wildlife within the Serengeti National Park and beyond.
Today, 16 months down the lane, the Public-Private Partnership has proved to be an apt model to save the wildlife population in the Serengeti, the Tanzania’s flagship national park.
FZS Project Manager, Mr. Erik Winberg, says that the program with a $211,000 package from tour operators has successfully managed to collect 17,536 snares, 157 animals released alive, 125 poacher camps discovered, and 32 poachers arrested....”

NEVER SMILE AT A CROCODILE!

Seriously

Witness Migration and drama daily, from about late June or early July until about late October. Herds, often in thousands, criss - cross the Mara river to reach new pasture. There are many well used crossing points along stretches of the Mara river as it winds its way across the Serengeti plains to lake Victoria. These crossings are perilous in the extreme and only attempted after much nervous inspection. It only takes one or two brave souls to leap into the water to trigger a mad rush into the water. Steep banks become clouded in dust as the animals stampede, often leaping off the river banks and tumbling to the water’s edge. They wade or swim as fast as they can in an attempt to cross the river safely. Casualties are frequent. Often a flotilla of giant crocodiles launch themselves at the line of crossing animals. On this occasion the crocodiles were not to be seen and probably satiated from earlier crossings.

Our North camp is an ideal base to view the crossings. Emmanuel our guide and his guests witnessed four crossings in one day …it does not get better than that!

Make sure you are at the APTA National Forum in Denver this week so you can hear Peter Lindstrom speak about the Changing Dynamics of Community Based Tourism in East Africa. You don't want to miss his presentation "Talking with the Elders ... and Now the Youngers."

Peter Lindstrom, Kenya born of Danish parents, grew up on a coffee farm where he his love of wide open spaces and leaned bush craft from his African companions.
He was educated in Kenya before completing his studies in England in natural sciences before returning to Kenya with his wife Aletta.
With ambitions to be involved in Tourism he was employed briefly managing tented camps. One such camp belonging to Root and Leakey safaris was contracted to provide Oilfield exploration teams and it was this quirk of fate that determined many years to come. Ethiopia became a new theatre of exploration and the chance to visit this country was exciting and hungry for adventure Peter and his Kenyan camp and camp crew drove to a country little known to outsiders and with a King, Haile Selassie, “The Lion of Judah.”
A revolution put an end to Peter’ s brief sojourn in Ethiopia the die was cast for the next two decades of remote area logistical support and camp services throughout the African and near East before his closing the circle and returning to his roots and finally a migration to Tanzania to cofound a Safari Company Hoopoe safaris which now operates in East Africa.
In the past two decades Hoopoe has been one of the pioneers in Tanzania Community based Tourism and increasingly involved in Conservation particularly advocacy during the industrial scale poaching of elephant. He has a passion for wildlife photography, running and mountain biking and cooking with an African flavor. Training of the Hoopoe Safari guides and all that is good guiding is an essential and enjoyable part of Peter’s time.

The scene is immediately in front of the dining room @ Kirurumu Tarangire Lodge where we sit around the fire at night.

The dining room was surrounded for a while by the family of Elephants, but being marooned for an hour at breakfast by hungry elephants is all part of a safari and there will be fond memories for our lucky guests who had the pleasure of meeting our semi resident family.

Our treasured family trashed all the lovely stand of “Panicum maximum” (A tasty tall green grass) that germinated on the camp fire terrace below the dining room during and after the long rains. It had become a nice feature in front, but we really kept it there for the elephants.
