It's World Lion Day, which should be a cause for celebration (after all, the Saber-toothed Cat and the North American Cheetah didn't make it this far), but big cats are in trouble across the planet. We cannot be content to see beautiful images of majestic cats without trying to help them get through the crises created by the human population explosion and all the ways that our actions kill or displace them. I also encourage you to support the Biocultural Conservation Institute. We work with the Maasai adjacent to Amboseli National Park in Kenya to reduce human-wildlife conflicts and support wildlife conservation.

Lion populations are crashing in much of Africa because of poaching, habitat loss, irresponsible game hunting, and corruption (see Dr. Craig Packer's Lions in the Balance).
