Mount Kilimanjaro is a challenge like no other, testing every climber with unpredictable weather, tough terrain, and the effects of high altitude. Unfortunately, Jasmine and Erika had to make the difficult decision to descend early due to illness.
The GO2KILI team is incredibly proud of these two courageous women for taking on this monumental challenge. Many people never leave their home country, let alone leave and attempt to scale Africaâs tallest mountainâwhat an incredible achievement to even begin this journey!
Asante sana (thank you very much), , and for inspiring us with your bravery and determination. Kili will always be here, and there is much more waiting for you to experience in Tanzania. â¤ď¸ đď¸
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu CampÂ
* Elevation: 3,900 m to 4,673 m / 12,795 ft 15,331 ftÂ
* Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles
* Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
* Habitat: Alpine Desert
Mayra and the team began the day by descending into the Barranco Ravine, followed by a challenging climb up the Great Barranco Wall. This natural barrier divides the southeastern slopes of Kibo.
Did you know Kilimanjaro has three distinct peaks?
* Kibo: The highest, crowned by Uhuru Peak at 5,895m.
* Mawenzi: A jagged, rugged beauty standing at 5,149m.
* Shira: The oldest, now a vast plateau at 4,005m.
The Barranco Wall required some bouldering and scramblingânon-technical but long and physically demanding. Mayra made her way beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers through the Karanga Valley, where the team stopped for a well-earned lunch.
After refueling, they continued their journey to Barafu Camp, the final base before summit night. As they moved through the desolate, arid terrain, the scree slopes began to form, marking the steep ascent to Barafu.
Weâre cheering you on, Mayra! Uhuru Peak is just aheadâkeep going, youâve got this! đď¸đŞ
