KIGOMA TOWN
The bustling town of Kigoma is the regional capital of western Tanzania and a central port in the area. Located on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, Kigoma is surrounded by rugged mountains and forests that make it a pleasing and beautiful location

Historically, the town was the final stop of the Central Line railway, built in the 20th century to transport agricultural goods from the African hinterland to the East African Coast. The town makes a good overland base for visits and chimpanzee safaris to both Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park.

Kigoma is at the end of road B381, leaving the national road B8 at Kasulu. Roads are passable and steadily being improved. Traversing the country takes 3-4 days.

TO SEE AROUND KIGOMA:
- Ujiji, the nearby former Arab slave trading settlement, the famous meeting place of Stanley and Livingstone.
- Gombe National Park for chimpanzee viewing

1. Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa
Tanzania is situated in East Africa including the islands Zanzibar, Mafia and Pemba. It borders Kenya and Uganda to the north and Mozambique, Zambia and Malawi to the south. It also shares borders with Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

2. The swahili language.
Tanzania is a multilingual nation with many different languages. Swahili is the official language of Tanzania. However, English is also widely spoken.

3. Tanzania currency
The currency in Tanzania is called the Tanzanian shilling.

4. Kilimanjaro Mountain.
Tanzania is home to the tallest mountain in Africa, best known for Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the highest free standing mountain in the world and the highest in Africa. Almost every type of ecological system can be found here. If you’re a hiker, it is definitely worth climbing.

5. The Serengeti migration.
The world’s largest mammal migration takes place in Tanzania.
Serengeti National Park is the oldest park in Tanzania and is another highly visited tourist destination. All of the big five can be found here (lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard and rhino).
