Since 2010, 13 years ago, Fair Travel has been setting an example by compensating our porters 18usd/day (45,000tsh/day). Recently, the Ministry of tourism are taking well needed efforts to raise minimum wages for porters to 10usd/day (25,000tsh/day). Even if the wage hike is not enough according to Fair Travel compensation, carefully calculated based on living costs and agreed on by porters, it is still great news for Mount Kilimanjaro porters who have to work for exploitative wages. Fair Travel shall never die and our guests experiences contribute to the welfare and dignity of our colleagues:

Kilimanjaro porters' wages will skyrocket from Sh15,000 to Sh25,000 per day with effect from January 1, a much-deserved 66 percent increase.

Fair Travel™ (www.fairtravel.com) has worked closely with Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project, KPAP (www.kiliporters.org) who offer independent monitoring of Kilimanjaro climbs to ensure fair porter treatment. KPAP and Fair Travel™ both share the mission to improve the working conditions of the porters on Kilimanjaro by promoting socially-responsible Kilimanjaro climbs.

KPAPs work is invaluable and you can help our concerted efforts to raise awareness by sharing the message of responsible tourism and recommending your friends and family to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with Fair Travel™.

Here is a message from KPAP:

"Prior to the pandemic, growing competition among the numerous climbing operators servicing Kilimanjaro enabled unsatisfactory working conditions for porters as companies found ways to lower climb prices in their bids to obtain business.

With the current crisis, we are fearful that working conditions may return to extreme levels of exploitation as clients seek cheaper climb prices, not realizing the effect the reduced cost will have on the welfare of the mountain crew.

As the world continues to cope with covid and tourism begins to recover, we are making a concerted effort to improve the public’s awareness about responsible trekking on Mount Kilimanjaro."
