There’s an old adage about treading lightly and leaving only footsteps, and for me, venturing into these wild areas should only be done with companies that care. are one such company with a conscious philosophy that goes back before “eco” was a buzz word.

A couple weeks ago I completed a 5 day walk between Entara’s Esirai and Olmara camps. We drove a small section to avoid crossing big roads, covering over 50 miles during the 5 days. It’s really a privilege to be able to still find such tracts of wilderness and walk through them. Nevertheless, the pressures are evident and these areas are changing fast.

I found myself using the panorama mode on my phone camera in an attempt to capture that feeling of space, the beauty of the landscape…

I noticed this beautiful spray of leopard orchid flowers today…

Did you know that leopard orchids recruit ants when the flowers are in the bud stage by exuding nectar from glands that are not on the flower, but then when they bloom, they just emit scents that attract pollinators into thinking there’s a sweet nectar reward. Sweet enough to be fooled and visit various flowers and do the job, but at a low energy cost to the plant.

One of my favorite Serengeti flowers, this morning glory (Ipomea jaegeri) brings an intense and vibrant purple to the washed out, sun bleached, dry grasslands. The rains have finally arrived in the short grass plains of Serengeti. It’s a time of rapid transformation. Wildebeest that have spent the last 6 months zig-zagging the ecosystem in search of water will beeline towards the thunderheads and tropical convergence fronts.

Elephant bulls in musth, apparently notorious for their unpredictability, aggression etc, but I would beg to differ. Other than the occasional head-toss-ear-shake in annoyance, I find them often calm, self-absorbed, and rather photogenic… especially under foreboding skies. A small herd of elephants leaves the Tarangire river-valley headed to the hills to feed for the night. Led by a young matriarch, the burden of finding enough food and water for her family is stressful, and she pushes in with haste. The recent fires have filled the sky with soot and smoke, coupled by the dust from the long dry spell, creating ideal red-glow sunsets.

As a kid, I used to have a t-shirt that said “only elephants should wear ivory”. Look at this beauty. She and her mother (I assume? in the background) have put some decades behind them. Hard to believe that Serengeti was elephant free before the 60s, or at least no records of them. Close up to a special animal! With recent tragic videos of elephants knocking cars over, I was glad we got to spend some time with this musth elephant bull on our training drive. Knowledge is power and as we spend time with wildlife we learn to read their moods and behavior and also how to act appropriately to reduce stress towards the animals and ultimately give our guests a special experience.
