I recently came across the idea of JOMO (The Joy of Missing Out) and it hit home during a recent safari in the Serengeti.

With safaris growing ever more popular and business-driven companies fixated on numbers over quality, it takes effort to find moments of solitude, the space for respectful wildlife encounters, and deep immersion in nature. The JOMO was real, no other cars, no chasing sightings, no dust, no radio chatter…

As connectivity slowly consumes us, and machine intelligence slowly replaces simple day to day tasks including and especially communication, the human connection, raw and pure, is slowly becoming more and more significant. Time spent with each other, especially in the absence of digitalia, let alone in the setting not unlike that in which we reveled in our first technological advances as a species, must trigger some epigenetic chord. Sitting around a campfire, speaking to each other, surrounded by our family, friends, the clan… those who we depend on and who depend on us…

A father son moment deep in the heart of Serengeti. In this era of uber connectivity and endless distraction, a journey into the wilderness reminds us of what truly matters.

There’s an old adage about treading lightly and leaving only footsteps, and for me, venturing into these wild areas should only be done with companies that care. are one such company with a conscious philosophy that goes back before “eco” was a buzz word.

This lightweight camp was moved daily and set up under beautiful trees by lunch in time for us to walk in.

A couple weeks ago I completed a 5 day walk between Entara’s Esirai and Olmara camps. We drove a small section to avoid crossing big roads, covering over 50 miles during the 5 days. I found myself using the panorama mode on my phone camera in an attempt to capture that feeling of space, the beauty of the landscape…
