I noticed this beautiful spray of leopard orchid flowers today…

Did you know that leopard orchids recruit ants when the flowers are in the bud stage by exuding nectar from glands that are not on the flower, but then when they bloom, they just emit scents that attract pollinators into thinking there’s a sweet nectar reward. Sweet enough to be fooled and visit various flowers and do the job, but at a low energy cost to the plant.

A beautiful start to another safari… this time we start with some game drives based out of our Esirai mobile camp, and then walk across the wilderness zone to Olmara. It’s really a privilege to have the variety of safari experiences that I get to guide. No 2 are ever the same.

One of my favorite Serengeti flowers, this morning glory (Ipomea jaegeri) brings an intense and vibrant purple to the washed out, sun bleached, dry grasslands. The rains have finally arrived in the short grass plains of Serengeti. It’s a time of rapid transformation. Wildebeest that have spent the last 6 months zig-zagging the ecosystem in search of water will beeline towards the thunderheads and tropical convergence fronts.

Elephant bulls in musth, apparently notorious for their unpredictability, aggression etc, but I would beg to differ. Other than the occasional head-toss-ear-shake in annoyance, I find them often calm, self-absorbed, and rather photogenic… especially under foreboding skies. This dude let us close enough to use 1x portrait mode.

A small herd of elephants leaves the Tarangire river-valley headed to the hills to feed for the night. Led by a young matriarch, the burden of finding enough food and water for her family is stressful, and she pushes in with haste. The recent fires have filled the sky with soot and smoke, coupled by the dust from the long dry spell, creating ideal red-glow sunsets.

After a long day on safari, I love the half hour after the sun sets, the temperature drops, and for a while there is silence before the night creatures begin their calling. Sometimes the light is magic too.

I wrote a short manual once- a guide to identifying trees and shrubs of a park by leaf and other features…. Having spent some time now in a forest where many trees have leaves 20-30m above where I can reach we might need to look at a manual on hugging trees and identifying them by touch.

It’s only a week in the office, but I’m already craving the bush. Went for a quick night walk in my garden to find Lizzie, a flap-necked chameleon. I once had one of these as a pet, given to me and my brothers by a missionary in Chimala, Mbeya. We spent hours after school catching grasshoppers to it.

As a kid, I used to have a t-shirt that said “only elephants should wear ivory”. Look at this beauty. She and her mother (I assume? in the background) have put some decades behind them. Hard to believe that Serengeti was elephant free before the 60s, or at least no records of them. Close up to a special animal! With recent tragic videos of elephants knocking cars over, I was glad we got to spend some time with this musth elephant bull on our training drive. Knowledge is power and as we spend time with wildlife we learn to read their moods and behavior and also how to act appropriately to reduce stress towards the animals and ultimately give our guests a special experience.
