When the world gets too loud, this is where we come to listen again.
Ngorongoro Highlands, quiet, wild, and full of life.

Up here, everything slows down. The air is crisp, the forests are ancient, and the views stretch endlessly into the clouds. Every leaf, every breeze, every step draws you deeper into stillness.

For those seeking more than just a destination, this is where you reconnect with nature, with yourself.

Stay for days with our Tazama local guide team, sleep under the stars in your tent, and let the rhythm of the wild reset everything. It’s pure adventure, beauty, and peace all in one place.

This is the kind of place that reminds you how good it feels to be off.

Most people think of Kilimanjaro as a challenge for the body, something to tick off the bucket list. But those 6 to 8 days on the mountain change far more than just your altitude.

You’re not just climbing a peak, you’re coming back down as someone else.

1. Your stress levels drop. Significantly.
Spending several days surrounded by nothing but nature, breathing clean mountain air, and moving with intention lowers cortisol levels (your body’s main stress hormone). Research shows that forest environments, like Kilimanjaro’s lush lower slopes, reduce stress, heart rate, and blood pressure. Add to that a full digital detox and your nervous system finally gets the break it’s been begging for.

2. Your mind starts to reset.
Modern life overloads your attention span. But Kilimanjaro does the opposite. The sights, sounds, and movement are what scientists call “soft fascinations”they calm your mind while gently holding your focus. After just a few days, mental fatigue fades and your ability to concentrate sharpens. In fact, a study found that multi-day immersion in nature can boost creative problem-solving by up to 50%.

3. You become more present, and a better problem solver.
Every day on Kilimanjaro is a lesson in slowing down and listening, whether it’s to your body, your breath, or your guide’s voice saying “pole pole.” Even the smallest decisions, where to place your foot, how much water to drink require awareness. This mindfulness in motion clears mental clutter and trains your brain to stay focused and resilient.

4. You meet yourself again.
With no phone, no title, no pressure, just you and the mountain, you remember who you are. The silence gives space for reflection. The physical challenge tests your limits. And the summit? That’s just a metaphor. What matters most is the shift in perspective and the clarity that comes with it.

Ready to reconnect with yourself at 19,000 feet?
This is the kind of journey that stays with you, long after your boots are off. Let Tazama take you there, the way it was meant to be.

Ever wondered why lions always seem to be lounging around during the day?

Well, they’re not lazy, they’re just smart.

Lions can rest up to 20 hours a day, especially during the heat. Most of their energy is reserved for when it really counts like hunting at night or during the cooler hours of dawn and dusk. Their night vision is six times better than ours, which gives them a serious advantage under the cover of darkness.

That said, lions are also opportunists. If the moment is right, cooler weather, prey nearby, or hunger kicking in they’ll hunt in broad daylight too.

But on most days? You’ll find them like this, stretched under the shade, conserving energy, blending into the stillness of the savannah.

On safari with Tazama, you get to witness it for what it is — unfiltered, powerful, and real.

MAASAI BOMA

You haven’t truly explored Tanzania until you’ve sat inside a Maasai Boma, surrounded by one of the world’s most resilient and proud cultures.

It’s not just a visit, it’s a moment of connection.
You’ll be welcomed into their circular homes built by hand, sit with elders who pass down centuries of wisdom, and witness how tradition shapes daily life from the sacred role of cattle to how families are structured, how they dress, cook, sing, and gather.

It’s raw, real, and humbling.
Expect to hear stories that haven’t been written down, dance to rhythms passed from generation to generation, and learn how the Maasai still thrive with grace in a changing world.

This isn’t staged tourism. It’s a respectful cultural exchange—and one of the most eye-opening things you can add to your safari.

📍 Often combined with routes near Ngorongoro, Lake Natron, or Longido.

Add this to your bucket list. The wildlife is unforgettable, but this is what you’ll talk about for years to come.

When people think of Zanzibar, they often picture the beautiful beaches but there’s so much more beauty beyond the shore.

It’s the buildings, timeless structures built as far back as the 18th and 19th centuries, with coral stone walls, Indian-influenced balconies, and Arabian-inspired arches. These walls have seen generations pass and still stand strong, telling tales of trade, resistance, and resilience.

It’s also the everyday rhythm of the streets: kids laughing as they run past carved doors, elders gathered for stories and coffee, and shopkeepers calling out greetings in Swahili. It’s a way of life that hasn’t changed much in decades, grounded, warm, and deeply connected to tradition.

When we bring guests here, it’s not just to walk around, it’s to slow down, observe, and learn. You’ll hear stories about the people who built this place, the cultures that met here, and how Zanzibar became a melting pot of Africa, Arabia, and beyond.

This is the other side of Zanzibar raw, rich, and unforgettable.

Lake Natron, one of the most otherworldly places in Tanzania.

Found in the remote northern corner near the Kenyan border, just beneath the dramatic Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, Lake Natron feels like a destination from another planet.

Its shallow waters shimmer in shades of red and pink, colored by the minerals and microorganisms that thrive in its extreme conditions. But what truly sets it apart? This is the primary breeding ground for lesser flamingos in East Africa—millions gather here in season, turning the lake into a living, breathing sea of pink.

Beyond the flamingos and surreal landscapes, Lake Natron offers something deeper: raw adventure and untouched beauty. It’s not a place for crowds or luxury; it’s a place for silence, for wonder, for reconnecting.

Here’s what you can experience in and around the area:
• Hike to Ngare Sero Waterfalls – a lush oasis hidden in the cliffs
• Explore Maasai communities, and get a window into a proud and resilient culture
• Trek Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred mountain of the Maasai and one of the world’s rare active carbonatite volcanoes
• Watch the sun melt into the flamingo-filled lake, with nothing but the sound of wind and water
• Camp under endless skies, with stars that feel close enough to touch
• Spot wildlife like giraffes, zebras, and antelope roaming the plains near the lake

Lake Natron isn’t your typical destination—and that’s what makes it unforgettable. It’s wild. It’s spiritual. It’s one of those places that changes you, quietly.

At TAZAMA, we guide travelers who want more than a trip—they want connection, perspective, stories that stay with them. And Lake Natron is one of our favorite places to make that happen.

Did you know there isn’t just one kind of giraffe?

There are nine recognized giraffe subspecies across Africa — each with its own pattern, size, and habitat. They may look similar from afar, but their coats, shapes, and even behaviors tell different stories.

Why the differences?
Over time, giraffe populations became isolated in different regions. With varying climates, predators, and vegetation, they evolved distinct traits to adapt and survive — from coat color that helps camouflage in their environment to size and feeding habits shaped by local trees.

Here’s a quick breakdown of these gentle giants and where you’ll find them:

📍 Nubian Giraffe – Northeastern South Sudan, Ethiopia, and western Kenya. Light coat, sharply defined patches.
📍 Kordofan Giraffe – Central Africa (Chad, Cameroon, CAR, DRC). Smaller and has irregular, pale spots.
📍 Western Giraffe – Native to Niger. Pale-colored and extremely rare.
📍 Rothschild’s Giraffe – Northern Uganda and Kenya. Very light legs — almost no markings below the knees.
📍 Reticulated Giraffe – Northern Kenya and Ethiopia. Net-like pattern with white borders.
📍 Thornicroft’s Giraffe – Only found in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley. Distinct, irregular spots with clear edges.
📍 Southern Giraffe – Southern Africa. Star-shaped patches and lighter overall.
📍 Angolan Giraffe – Namibia, Botswana, and Angola. Pale with large, uneven patches.
📍 Masai Giraffe – Common in Tanzania and southern Kenya. Irregular, jagged patterns like vines or leaves.

Each giraffe is a result of millions of years of adaptation — and each deserves protection. As you swipe through the slides, see if you can tell them apart.

Nature never repeats herself.

When deciding to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, there are several routes you can choose based on your preferences. Each route is crafted to match different styles of adventure, fitness levels, and goals. Here’s a closer look at the five incredible routes we offer at Tazama:

Machame Route (6–7 days)
Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is perfect if you’re looking for a scenic and adventurous climb. It’s steep in some sections, but offers stunning views and a great acclimatization profile, making it one of the most popular choices.

Lemosho Route (7–8 days)
Often described as the most beautiful route, Lemosho starts on the remote western side of the mountain. It’s quieter, offers diverse landscapes, and has a high summit success rate thanks to its gradual ascent — a favorite for many climbers who want the best overall experience.

Rongai Route (6–7 days)
Rongai approaches from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. It’s less crowded and drier, giving you a different perspective of the mountain. It’s a bit easier in terrain but slightly harder in acclimatization compared to southern routes.

Umbwe Route (5–6 days)
Looking for a serious challenge? Umbwe is Kilimanjaro’s steepest and most direct route. It’s best suited for experienced climbers who are ready for intense trekking and rapid altitude gain, offering a raw, wild, and rewarding experience.

Northern Circuit (8–9 days)
The longest route on Kilimanjaro — and the quietest. Northern Circuit offers the best acclimatization and highest success rate. You’ll circle almost the entire mountain, seeing diverse ecosystems few others get to experience.

So, which one is the best?
If you’re aiming for the best mix of scenery, success rate, and experience, Lemosho is often the top recommendation. But the “best” really depends on what you’re looking for — challenge, solitude, scenery, or a faster climb.

At Tazama, we’re here to guide you every step of the way toward your dream summit. Which route will you take to the top?

Superb Starling
One of the most eye-catching birds you’ll spot on safari, thanks to its glossy blue, green, and orange feathers that shimmer in the sunlight. And yes—it’s just as superb as the name suggests!

These stunning birds can live up to 10–15 years in the wild, especially when free from predators. What makes them extra special? They’re incredibly social and often live in large family groups that help raise each other’s chicks—a rare thing in the bird world!

Listen closely and you’ll hear their melodic whistles and calls echoing across the savanna—pure safari soundtrack magic.

Hidden high in Tanzania’s Crater Highlands, the Empakaai Crater is one of nature’s best-kept secrets. Remote, quiet, and wild—this volcanic caldera isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience.

Located in the heart of the Ngorongoro District, Empakaai (Kasoko la Empakai) rises to an elevation of over 3,000 meters and cradles a deep alkaline lake that glows emerald or sapphire beneath the mist. The lake covers nearly three-quarters of the crater floor and sinks 85 meters at its deepest point. It’s a place where silence has its own sound, and time feels suspended.

No roads lead you in. You have to walk—through misty forests and along craggy paths—until the crater opens up before you. The descent is like slipping into a secret world. You’ll move through a lush, green forest alive with birdsong and echoes of ancient earth. At the bottom, flamingos dance across the soda lake, and the only footprints are yours.

From the rim, the views stretch across Tanzania’s wild north — from Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred mountain of fire, to the far-off snowcaps of Mount Kilimanjaro, and the deep cut of the Great Rift Valley.

This is more than a stop on an itinerary. It’s a connection — with the land, with silence, and with something far greater than a postcard scene.

At Tazama, we don’t just take you to Empakaai—we guide you into its story. Whether it’s part of a multi-day trek or a standalone crater hike, we handle the details so you can focus on the wonder. No cars. No plastic. Just you, the trail, and the wilderness.

If your idea of travel includes walking where few dare and seeing what few have seen—put Empakaai on your bucket list. And when you’re ready to go, we’ll be waiting.🤗

Our Story

Tazama Africa is in the business of helping travelers create memories to last a lifetime. With over a decade of experience in the East Africa safari business, we know what works. We offer authentic experiences that are tailored to you and your interests.

We use environmentally sustainable business practices every step of the way. We are proudly 100% single-use plastic-free on every trip.

When we set out to create Tazama Africa, our ethos was to empower people and protect this precious ecosystem. It is integrated into every choice we make, how we hire and train our staff, where we take our clients, and how and where we source our materials. At Tazama Africa, we believe that tourism practiced responsibly can be a driving force in conservation and that is what we have set out to do.

We believe in the power of travel to bring about positive impact, both for visitors and the local communities. Our positive impact program, Tazama Porini (Swahili for 'see the bush') aims to inspire a love for nature in Tanzanian youth from a young age. We partner with non-governmental organizations and schools to bring young Tanzanians into the national parks to learn about Tanzania's ecosystem alongside our guides. We also show students how they can get involved in conservation and play a lifelong role in protecting the environment for years to come.
