"Hey Ramon, I would love to go on a safari, after my trek of the Kilimanjaro. But why are these trips so darn expensive everywhere I look?"
There are a few key reasons why safaris in Tanzania can be quite expensive:
1 * High demand: Tanzania is home to some of the most iconic safari destinations, including the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. This high demand from travelers allows necessary accommodations near or even inside these national parks to charge premium prices.
2 * Exclusive access: Many of Tanzania's best safari areas are located within national parks and conservation areas that require extra permits and specialized guides to access. These permits and guide fees add significantly to the overall cost. The entrance fee for the Lake Manyara National Park starts at 53 US$, then add the rate for a car, driver and guide.
3 * High-quality accommodations: Many safari lodges and camps in Tanzania offer luxurious, high-end accommodations with amenities like private plunge pools, gourmet dinners, and personalized service. These upscale facilities come at a premium price.
4 * Transportation costs: Getting to and around Tanzania's remote safari destinations often requires costly charter flights or private vehicle transfers, which are factored into safari package prices.
5 * Government fees and taxes: The Tanzanian government imposes various fees and taxes on safari operators, including park entrance fees, concession fees, and value-added tax. These are passed on to travelers.
6 * Conservation efforts: Many Tanzanian safari operators also need to contribute a portion of their revenues to wildlife conservation and community development initiatives, which helps maintain the health of the ecosystem but increases costs.
So in summary, the combination of high demand, exclusive access, high-end accommodations, remote locations, and government fees/taxes makes safaris in Tanzania one of the more expensive safari destinations globally.
However, many travelers find the unique wildlife and scenery to be well worth the price.
