The width and pattern of zebra stripes vary widely by species. The Grevy’s zebra has narrow vertical stripes covering its entire body, including its ears and mane. The striping pattern of the plains zebra varies by location; they have either black striping and a primarily white body color, or lighter, dark brown stripes overall. Mountain zebras have a white or off-white body color with black or deep brown body stripes that are spaced close together. They do not have stripes on their bellies, and those on their head and body are narrower than the ones on their rump. Even within each species, no two zebras have the same stripes; they are as unique as fingerprints.

The variation of black rhino is of some debate by researchers, but there’s generally accepted to be between 7-8 subspecies, with 3 sadly already extinct.

They are solitary creatures, only coming together when mating, or when a mother is raising her calf. Males are known as bulls, while females are known as cows.

These animals diverged from their white cousins around 4 million years ago and took to browsing branches with their well-adapted lips. Black rhino are herbivorous and like to diet on over 30 species of leafy plants, as well as branches, roots and fruit.

Though a group of hunting lions is potentially nature’s most formidable predatory force on land, a high proportion of their hunts fail. The cats pay no attention to the wind’s direction (which can carry their scent to their prey), and they tire after running short distances. Typically, they stalk prey from nearby cover and then burst forth to run it down in a short, rapid rush. After leaping on the prey, the lion lunges at its neck and bites until the animal has been strangled. Other members of the pride quickly crowd around to feed on the kill, usually fighting for access. Hunts are sometimes conducted in groups, with members of a pride encircling a herd or approaching it from opposite directions, then closing in for a kill in the resulting panic. The cats typically gorge themselves and then rest for several days in its vicinity. An adult male can consume more than 34 kg (75 pounds) of meat at a single meal and rest for a week before resuming the hunt. If prey is abundant, both sexes typically spend 21 to 22 hours a day resting, sleeping, or sitting and hunt for only 2 or 3 hours a day.

Elephants have around 150,000 muscle units in their trunk. Their trunks are perhaps the most sensitive organ found in any mammal. Elephants use their trunks to suck up water to drink – it can contain up to 8 litres of water. They also use their trunks as a snorkel when swimming.

Since giraffes have such long legs and necks, they cannot reach the ground and water from a standing position so they have to spread their front legs and bend their knees slightly and then lower their long neck and head before they can drink water. In addition to being a somewhat awkward and uncomfortable position to get in and be in for the giraffes, being forced to drink water like this actually also introduces several threats as it makes the giraffes much more vulnerable to predators.

Luckily for the giraffes, their bodies are extremely efficient at absorbing the water that is stored within the leaves, twigs, and other plants that they eat so they do not have to bend over and drink water from water holes and rivers very often as they already obtain large amounts of water through their food.

Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking – Standing at a towering 5,895m high, Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Located in northern Tanzania, in the Kilimanjaro National Park, it is often referred to as “The Roof of Africa” and people travel from all over the world to conquer her.

The cloud-swathed peaks of Africa’s highest mountain inspire climbers of all ages and abilities. This magnificent, still partially ice-capped peak crowns fantastically lush volcanic slopes, with plenty of wildlife interest along the lower forest trails. Climbs can be arranged up a variety of different routes, and with various options for accommodation. It is worth taking the time to acclimatize and enjoy the climb; altitude sickness accounts for most failed attempts to reach the summit.

Mount Kilimanjaro has six trekking routes and each route has its own advantages and disadvantages, so when selecting the route, make sure it is the appropriate route for your desires, physical ability, aptitude, and comfort level as this will contribute to your overall summit success.

'Banded Mongoose (Mungos Mungo) is a mongoose species native from the Sahel to
Southern Africa. It lives in savannas, open forest and grasslands and feeds primarily on beetles and millipedes. Mongooses use various types of dens for shelter including termite mounds. While most mongoose species live solitary lives, the banded mongoose live in colonies with a complex social structure. They are mainly insectivorous. A Banded Mongoose's diet consists of insects myriapods, small reptiles, and birds Though millipedes and beetles make up most of their diet, they also commonly eat ants, crickets, termites, grasshoppers, caterpillars, and earwigs. Their targeted prey are frogs, lizards, ground birds, small snakes, and even eggs.
The Banded Mongoose has a large sturdy head, small ears, short, brawny limbs, and a tail that ranges up to 15 to 30 cm. When it comes to their fur coat, they have coarse brownish-gray coats, and there are several dark brown to black horizontal lines across the back. These lines differentiate different Mongoose species.
Even though they are considered predators, they can also be considered prey due to their small size-they are even smaller than domestic cats. When a predator approaches banded mongooses they form together and move as a group, which creates an illusion of a single large animal. The beings in front may even stand
on their hind legs and make distinct noises toward the predator.

In eastern Africa, an average of 6,250 wildebeests drown in the Mara River per year. This represents around 0.5% of the herd. Around 200,000 of the weakest wildebees and zebra will die during the migration du to starvation, disease or over excursion - outsid e of predation. This is, however, advantageous for other animals in the ecosystem including buzzards, lions, cheetahs, crocodiles, and other predators.

Adult male lions grow an impressive mane, but manes are not just for cool looks alone. The manes can grow up to 16cm long and make lions look bigger than they are. That illusion of size proves useful in attracting mates and scaring off potential rivals. A lion’s mane also serves as protection for the neck and head during fights and hunting.

Black Rhinos are herbivores that live on a vegetarian diet of leaves and fruit from trees and bushes. They are grazers, but whilst they have been known to eat up to 220 species of plant, they are selective feeders that tend to go for the best quality food. They like to remain in close proximity to water but can survive for several days without water during droughts or when water supplies are limited.

Hippos forage for food at night – they are herbivores and will eat any plant that comes their way but mainly snack on grass as it’s their favourite. Even though they are surrounded by aquatic plants for most of the day, it is still not understood exactly why hippo do not eat these plants but rather opt to search for food on land. Hippo can walk up to 5 miles in search of food and spend around 5 hours a night grazing.

Lions are pretty good at relaxing. Actually, the average lion will spend between 16 and 20 hours a day just resting or sleeping. It’s because they do not have many sweat glands so in order to conserve energy, lions will just lie about and watch the world unfold around them. They are more active at night when it is cooler although they do conduct most of their hunting activity during the day.

We all know now that cheetahs are fast, but did you know the number of ways their bodies have evolved in order for them to become the world’s fastest animal? Cheetahs generally weigh around 125 pounds, making them lightweight and easy to accelerate. They have a small head, lean legs, and a flat rib cage to make them more aerodynamic by minimizing air resistance. Their semi-retractable claws and hard foot pads help their feet maintain traction, while their long tail is used to stabilize and steer the body. A cheetah’s skeleton acts as a spring, with its unusually flexible spine and hips, and free-moving shoulder blades. Because running as fast as this requires lots of oxygen, their nasal passages and lungs are enlarged to help intake more air. Cheetahs are able to breathe up to 150 times per minute while running, up from 60 breaths per minute at rest.

Lionesses are the primary hunters of the pride. They are smaller and more agile than males and they use teamwork to bring an animal down. After a successful hunt, all the lions in the pride share the meal. But there is a pecking order, with the adult males eating first, followed by the lionesses and finally the cubs. The males protect both the pride and the pride’s territory (which can extend up to 100 square miles) from competing prides and other predators. Anywhere from 85-90% of the hunting is done by the females in a given pride.

Flamingos usually pose with one foot tucked under their bodies. A theory suggests that they do it to conserve body heat in the cold water of their feeding areas, but it has not been confirmed. Astonishingly, a study showed that this behavior does not cause muscle strain in their legs, which means they can do it without physical effort.

Did you know a group of Flamingos is called a flamboyance?

To stay cool in the blistering African heat, hippos spend most of their day in rivers and lakes. Their eyes, nose and ears are located on the top of their head, which means they can see and breathe whilst submerged in the water. What’s more, these super-cool creatures sweat an oily red liquid which helps protect their skin from drying out – and acts as a sunblock, too.

One unique characteristic of the leopard is its beautiful dark spots. Most leopards have light-colored skin and dark spots on their fur. These spots are called rosettes because of their rose-like shape. The spots are circular-shaped in Eastern African leopards and square-shaped in Southern Africa..
