The African Savanna (Bush) elephant is the world's largest land animal – with adult males, or bull elephants, standing up to 3m high and weighing up to 6,000kg on average. Their tusks are used to help with feeding - peeling bark off trees or digging up roots - or as a defense when fighting.

Elephants eat so much that they can spend up to three-quarters of their day just eating.

Standing up when they sleep allows zebras to be alert and ready to take off much faster than if they were laying down. This is important since they are preyed on by several large African predators and need to be able to escape quickly when necessary.

Zebras usually stay together in groups (called a herd, a dazzle, or a zeal) since this is much safer than staying alone. When zebras stay together, there will always be at least one zebra awake to look out for predators. If a predator approaches the herd, the zebra that is awake will make a distinct noise to alert the rest of the herd and wake them up so they can run away.

Grey crowned cranes are omnivores. They eat grain, seeds and plants as well as frogs, worms, snakes, small fish and the eggs of aquatic animals. Grey crowned cranes spend the majority of their day looking for food, and they’ve developed some clever strategies to get it. They stamp their feet as they walk to flush out insects, which they’ll quickly catch and eat.

Grey crowned cranes are currently classified as Endangered (EN).

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. It is also one of Africa's Seven Natural Wonders due to its breathtaking natural features. The Ngorongoro Crater is known as a home to over 25,000 animals, including the big five: elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, lions and leopards.

Other animals found in this crater include hippos, hyenas, warthogs, zebras, elands, gazelles, wildebeests, just to name a few. This makes Ngorongoro Crater probably the best site in Tanzania to spot and watch the big five as well as other wild species more easily.
