Jambo Dashir friends. I just received this lovely set of "Big 5" photos from our first postponed COVID group in March 2020 (glad that's becoming a more distant memory!). This was from their adventure in Jan 2023 (photos thanks to Wendy Molnar), very lucky to see all Big 5 in the Serengeti in a single day!

Just now, 7:30 p.m. It’s all of a sudden “freezing cold” at plus 18 degrees C, after a plus 30 day. This crazy storm is coming in from Mt Meru. I’m putting on my jacket for the first time ever in Feb!!!

Enjoy some views yesterday and today at Ngorongoro Crater from Serena Lodge on the crater rim from the Illinois9 crew: afternoon rainbow, morning sunrise, and a panoramic view from the room. They were excited to have two good black rhino sightings, to complete their big 5 list at the end of their 8-day safari. (Oh, and the spectacle of a spread of wildebeest and zebras "as far as the eye can see" at Ndutu.)

It's a girl! ... born in the Dashir forest under the Tamarind tree on New Year's Day. We now have three calves and three mamas in our small herd of ten cattle. Dashir is literally a land flowing with milk and ... er ... still waiting on the honey (the irritably pesky small fire ants keep invading our hives!).
Our Maasai and other workers are overjoyed to sip "tea-milk" every morning (about a 1:2 ratio), rather than "milk-tea" or "tea-tea." And our scrumptious Dashir baking has never been better.

Oh boy! I should have rechecked the wording in my last post. I should have said "We are off ... in our imagination." 🙃 No Zanzibar for us at this time, as we are busy with guests at Dashir Lodge.

Today, the Dashir Lodge workers trim the tree - an aloe sisal stem! (It's the same material as the porous, light-weight, vertical members of the roof in the background.) Afterwards, it’s time for a staff trip - off to the Mount Meru Fair Coffee Tour, a guest favourite.
It’s beginning to feel a little bit like Christmas. And there's even a beautiful fresh blanket of snow ... on the top of Mt Kilimanjaro!

SS had a neat lion pride experience in Central Serengeti, the best place in the world for big cats (in my humble opinion). It looks like this mama has her paws full. Where are the other mamas? Interesting that the whole clan had no worries with sharing the road with the vehicles, literally creating a most glorious traffic jam! Off-roading is not allowed in the national parks, so this was a very special safari moment up close and personal. Have a nice day. 🤗

Today, as a staff of about 70, we eat a nutritious lunch of ugali (corn meal paste), garden greens, and tilapia fish from the Dashir pond. Want to come and catch your own dinner entree? Have a nice day. 🤗

Getting close to elephants at Tarangire National Park is a safari staple … lots and lots of them. Having elephants join for a snack at the Tarangire Safari Lodge reception was a nice surprise for our guests - just happened a few hours ago! Have a nice day. 🤗

The sunrise balloon ride, if you’re willing to fork out the extra cash, is a once-in-a-lifetime safari staple. What you see along the way is a safari surprise - luck of the draw. Have a nice day. 🤗 (Video from SS last week, in TZ WhatsApp group.)

Safari Staple - The hush in the vehicle as safari-goers witness, up close and personal, the majestic gait of the giraffe. It never gets old, all the way through safari. Thanks to PB for sharing this video taken at Tarangire National Park a few weeks ago. Have a nice day. 🤗
