January 2024 Diaries
The 6 days Marangu route climb is one of the most popular routes for climbing Kilimanjaro. It's often referred to as the "Coca-Cola" route due to the availability of amenities like sleeping huts. It's a moderate route with a gradual ascent, making it suitable for beginners. Ensure proper acclimatization, follow your guide's advice, and be prepared for varying weather conditions. Climbers come from all over the world to tackle an ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro, we say Mt Kilimanjaro is definitely worth climbing. It’s one of the so-called Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each continent. Mt Kilimanjaro ranks at number four in terms of elevation, after Mount Everest, Aconcagua and Denali. What it lacks in stature, it makes up for in drama. The first recorded summit attempt was made way back in 1889 by a German named Hans Meyer, his Austrian mountaineer partner Ludwig Purtscheller and a local guide Yohani Kinyala Lauwo. Since then, thousands have followed in their footsteps and site the experience as simply extraordinary.

Wildebeest migration
The Central Serengeti is a fantastic area to see the Great Migration in action: the herds move through this section of the park from April to June as they travel northwards, and then they come back again heading south from October to December. When hyenas compete over a kill with adult male lions, the lions will always dominate or take over the kill, no matter how many hyenas are recruited. The hyenas may nevertheless harass feeding lion males to make them abandon the kill or distract them by taking scraps of meat and bones. In most cases though, the hyenas will simply lie down in the vicinity and patiently wait for the lions to become too hot or full and leave the carcass.

Kosovo Camp (4870m/15,978 ft), the last segment before summit day. The Keen's group team has now climbed to high camp and will be heading to the summit tonight! 

The team reached Kosovo Camp (4870m/15,978 ft), at 11.35am. They did so earlier this morning and were pleased to be on their way down, as they continued up past Barafu Camp, where the majority of climbers stay. The extra effort today will give them a shorter summit day tomorrow. So now they rest, and will have an early dinner before trying to catch a few hours sleep.
Tomorrow begins at midnight, quite literally, as they will get up and prepare to leave at 1am.

GIRAFFE
The tallest land mammal, with a neck as long as 6 feet, the giraffe is also well known for the unique brown and white pattern on its coat (“pelage”) and its lengthy eyelashes and legs.

Life Cycle: male (bulls) and female (cows) giraffe can live to about 25 years in the wild and even longer in captivity.
Giraffes eat a very wide variety of trees and shrubs and spend a large part of each day browsing.

The Lions Brother in serengeti

Lion symbolizes strength, courage, Dominance, royalty, and ferocity. Despite of known as the “king of the jungle”, lion lives in grasslands, plains & savannahs. They are the habitat of grasslands, shrublands, and open woodlands. Famous for its black & yellow manes, a lion can leap 36 feet. Lion loves to take a long nap of 20 hours. Serengeti National park is famous for the highest population of African lions. Most of the people love to hear the “roar” of a lion. The roar of a lion can be heard 5 miles away.

Amazing fact is they are the better hunter than lions. Due to the lightweight and flexible body, their speed is 30% more than the speed of the lion. Having a slimmer body helps them to stay hidden for a long time in the grass which helps them to hunt more.

The African wild dog, or painted wolf, is the most persecuted predator on the continent. It is also the most elusive and enigmatic. However, most people are unaware of this special creature’s existence.

Even though they are much smaller than lion and leopards, wild dogs have a higher success rate when it comes to killing prey. Hunting at dawn and dusk, they work as a team and can bring down much larger animals, including antelope and wildebeest.

Unlike other dogs, which have five toes on their forefeet, these canines have only four toes per foot and no dew claw. Body weight of adults range from 18 to 36 kg (40 to 79 lb.). Females are slightly smaller than males. In a sprint, African wild dogs can reach speeds of more than 70 km per hour (44 mph).
