MOUNTAINS
The mountain region of Tanga are the Usambaras, they consist of two mountain blocks. The smaller East Usambaras lie closer to the coast, are less populated and the primary attractions are the two nature reserves, Amani and Nilo. The West Usambaras are separated from the East by a valley and are approached via the district centre of Lushoto. The Usambaras are part of the Eastern Arc, a world biodiversity hotspot. This exceptional diversity attracts naturalists from all over the world who come to watch birds, study trees and flowers or butterflies. Besides the two nature reserves of the East Usambaras, there are in the Western Usambaras the newly gazetted Magamba Nature Reserve (includes Shume forest), the privately owned and well-protected Mazumbai reserve, and a number of other forest reserves like Shagayu, Mkuzu and Ndelemai.

Mbeya is a region of many attractions but our unsurpassed treasure in the crown is Lake Ngosi, which is one of the most intriguing tourism hotspot in the southern Highland of Tanzania. Less than 30 minutes by car from Mbeya Town, tourists will find themselves in the virgin paradise surrounded by the natural forest and beautiful views of the Poroto Forests.

Lake Ngosi is among the lakes formed by volcanic activities many years ago and it is the second largest Crater Lake in Africa after lake W***h in Ethiopia. It’s found 38 kilometers from Mbeya town on the Tanzania –Malawi Highway district of Rungwe and Mbeya Rural.

It has an African map shape which makes it very special and interesting to visitors.

The local people who belong to the famous tribe called the Safwa discovered it. The name Ngosi comes from the Safwa language word ‘Ligosi’, which means big, before Tanzania Forest Service Agency tooK control, the lake was under the supervision of two Safwa clans, Chief Mlotwa Mwalingo who was ruling on the west side and Chief

Mount Rungwe Nature Forest Reserve is one of the best tourist destinations in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania covering an area of 24,680 ha. The reserve is situated in Rungwe District, Mbeya Region and was named after Rungwe Mountain which harbors several endemic flora and fauna. The reserve is synonymous with Lake Ngosi, the second largest Crater Lake in Africa and the leading tourist attraction in the reserve. The lake is situated at the top of Mt. Rungwe forming the highest peak in the Southern Highland of Tanzania.
Alongside Lake Ngosi, other tourist attractions found within Mount Rungwe Nature Reserve are the rare red colobus monkeys known as Rungwe Cebus and locally named "Kipunji"; the bamboo belt; the flowing rivers of Kiwira, Kibisi and the spectacular view of the rift valley.
