Today is World Elephant Day, and Tanzania has a lot to celebrate. Tanzania was hit by an elephant poaching crisis, but thanks to good multi agency collaboration, good coordination from the community level to a national level and strong political will, Tanzania turned the tide on poaching and is now a safe place again for elephants. With Tanzania being such an amazing country with no fences and wildlife still able to migrate in and out of protected areas (as seen by this photo), one of the challenges the country now faces as elephant numbers increase and their is increased competition for land, is human wildlife conflict. PAMS Foundation is however fully committed to help ensure human-elephant coexistence! Happy World Elephant day!

The NTA Product Development Trip to Tanzania is off to a flying start. The first two days of the safari tour in the Kilimanjaro region of the country took Jerry Varner of Making Memories Tours and Courier's Pat Henderson -- along with host Scholastica Ponera of Tanzania-based Pongo Safaris & Tours -- to Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park. The group was joined by zebras, baboons, wildebeest, hyenas, giraffes, impalas, three leopards and many more fascinating creatures.

VULTURE DIARIES
The latest movement map from our satellite tagged vultures continues to provide fascinating and crucial insight into their activity. All but one of the birds remained in the Ruaha-Rungwa ecosystem throughout May, staying close to river networks and the northern part of Ruaha National Park, averaging 2,700 km travel each. Excitingly, 2 of these birds are nesting (see link below), while the incredible journey of ‘Bird 113’ continue to amaze us. This adventurous bird visited 3 countries in May, leaving South Africa for Botswana and then Zimbabwe. Here it seems to be using private game reserves to find food, water and roost sites. Alarmingly, 94 critically endangered vultures were recently poisoned in SE Zimbabwe – almost certainly by poachers trying to conceal the killing of an elephant. Bird 113 did not visit the site at this time, and we can only hope it does not become victim of such an event. However, this news and our new-found insight into the extent of some vulture’s movements, highlights poisoning as both a local and international threat to vultures, with the need for transboundary conservation initiatives to tackle it.
This vulture research project is a collaboration between WCS Tanzania, North Carolina Zoo and Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).
