Lions have a fascinating mating behavior that is both intense and brief. When a female lion is in estrus (the period when she is fertile), she will signal her readiness through a series of behaviors, including increased vocalizations and scent marking. Mating itself is highly repetitive; once a lioness becomes receptive, the mating pair will copulate multiple times over the course of several days—sometimes up to 20 times in a 24-hour period.
What’s particularly striking is that lion mating is often quite violent and aggressive. The male will sometimes bite the female on the neck or back as a way of asserting dominance, which can make the act look brutal. This behavior is thought to help the male maintain control over the female, ensuring that she remains in estrus for the duration of his mating efforts.
Interestingly, after mating, the female lion will typically give birth to a litter of cubs, and she may mate with several males over the course of a breeding season. This ensures genetic diversity within the pride, as different males may father different cubs in the same litter.
The entire mating process and its aggressive nature highlight the complex dynamics within lion prides, where relationships of power, dominance, and reproduction are tightly interwoven.

The Lion does not intend to eat this Wild dog, rather eliminate him from the food web. One less mouth to feed means more food to go around. The rest of the pack gave chase in this instance because the pack member in this lion’s mouth was still alive. For whatever reason, the lion waited until he had his victim in the bushes before delivering the killing blow.
