Welcome to the new Laba Jongomero Thermal Spa. Since time immemorial, hot springs were believed to have supernatural powers and as such became an important healing modality.

So when we discovered volcanic hot springs on the banks of the Ruaha River, just 30 minutes from Laba Jongomero - we immediately sent samples of the water to a laboratory in France. They found them rich in sulphur, iodine and trace elements. Whoop whoop!

Which means that just as the ancient Greeks sought out sulphurous springs for healing skin diseases and relieving muscular and joint pain, you too can immerse yourself in our outdoor hot pool whenever you feel the need. The benefits for skin ailments such as eczema, acne, psoriasis and also for joints are well known. Not to mention the mind, thanks to the picturesque location. 🙌

As if you needed another reason to visit!

NO ORDINARY TREE As a symbol of life and positivity in Africa’s landscape, we are in awe of the baobab tree. Not just because it is considered one of the largest trees in the world (a miraculous feat considering its environment) but also for its ability to live well over 1 500 years. With many of these incredible trees in and around our camps, we are truly humbled by them.

Known as The Tree Of Life or the Upside Down Tree, the baobab is thought to predate both mankind and the splitting of the continents over 200 million years ago. Mind blowing! With their statuesque, outstretched limbs and bulbous, columnal trunks, Baobab trees are a fundamental player in the entire dry African savanna ecosystem with no other tree doing as much to sustain life. Their role in keeping soil conditions humid, aiding nutrient recycling, and slowing down soil erosion with their massive root systems cannot be underestimated. While their ability to store up to 4 500 litres of water in their trunks during drought-ridden periods (with 80% of this stored in their trunks) is astounding.

Essentially a succulent, the tree absorbs and stores water from the rainy season in its massive trunk, producing a nutrient-dense fruit in the dry season, which can grow up to a foot long. The fruit contains tartaric acid and Vitamin C - a vital nutrient and food source for many species. An essential source of water and shelter for hundreds of animals, including birds, lizards, monkeys, even elephants. The species of baobab found most commonly in Tanzania is Adansonia digitata, an elder and icon of the continent whose bark and fruit delivers over 300 life-sustaining uses.

Whenever we come across this tree we always take a moment to consider our shared destiny. That more connects us than divides us. And that modern man most likely evolved right here in East Africa - alongside this ancient species so deserving of our respect.

Set up along three major stages of the migration every year, in spectacular locations that are entirely open to nature, the interiors of Laba Migration Camp have been created by Laba Laba’s owner Julie Brisson as transformative spaces that invite nature in.

‘We don’t want to bring modernity or things that belong in a city here,’ she explains. ‘If it’s in the bush or on the beach it should reflect that, as well as the natural history, culture and typography peculiar to each.’ Julie’s gift for capturing the soul of a place, honed over years of working with her husband in their interior business, has ensured that every one of their five properties feels effortlessly luxurious yet accessible, and with the perfect ratio of simple pleasures and holiday rituals.

‘Energetically, we want each of our properties to have a strong sense of the pristine setting in which they are found and to serve as a reminder of the deep biological and psychological connection we all have with the wild,’ says Xavier.

Laba Migration camp offers just such an experience.

CHASING THE SUN Xavier Marie and Julie Brisson are the hands-on owners and creative masterminds behind Laba Laba’s nature-led safari experiences where the emphasis is on refuge, relaxation and wellness.

Africa has defined Xavier’s life in that he spent his formative years in Algeria and Senegal. Upon his return to France at the age of ten, Xavier couldn’t adapt and found himself constantly in search ‘of wild places, of nature, of sun’.

In his mid 20s – flush from early entrepreneurial success – Xavier returned to Africa full of expectation, only to discover that the places of his childhood were gone, the Africa he remembered irrevocably changed.

This fuelled a desire in him that saw him return year upon year (with Julie, children and friends in tow) in search of freedom and wild places, all while creating a retail furniture business that over a 20-year period would grow into an empire encompassing more than 250 shops in Europe.

‘In those days travel in Africa was always an epic road trip,’ laughs Julie. ‘Long before GPS we’d be traversing the national parks of Kenya and Tanzania, with many adventures as we explored remote places by car and on foot.’ And with more flat tyres than they care to remember too. ‘But the freedom, oh the freedom;’ says Xavier. ‘It was our central motivation.’ Then as now, come feel the freedom with

THE GREAT MIGRATION Just as millions of birds undertake ancient migratory routes every year that range from a few hundred miles to epic trans-continental journeys of more than 6 000 miles, so too do an estimated 1.5 million wildebeest, and some 700 000 zebra and Thompson’s gazelle that move en masse across the magnificent plains of East Africa. Laba Laba Migration Mobile Camp is your ringside seat to this profound and ancient spectacle. We pay homage to those explorers who came before us with the most luxurious mobile camp in the Serengeti, comprising just ten tents that are set up on three major stages of the migration - always spectacular locations that entirely open to nature. Once-in-a-lifetime experiences, every step of the way!
