🗣️ Tanzania is a multilingual country. Linguists say that 126 languages are spoken here.
⠀
🗣️ There are only 2 official languages: English and Swahili. Others are local dialects of Bantu and Nilotic language groups, as well as several "clicking" Khoisan languages.
⠀
🗣️ Swahili is spoken by about 100 million people, it is the language of interethnic communication in the countries of East Africa, and partly of the Southern African countries.
⠀
🗣️ Swahili is the first universally recognized African language of international communication. No wonder it is reffered to as "the king of African languages".
⠀
🗣️ The language is relatively young: Swahili is about 1000 years old.
⠀
🗣️ It originated as the trade language of the Indian Ocean coastline. The coastal regions of Tanzania are the homeland of the language: the first Swahili document was written in Kilwa, and its Zanzibari dialect was adopted as the standard of modern Swahili.
⠀
🗣️ In Swahili, the language is called Kiswahili. Why? Sawahili is the plural of the Arabic word sahil (coast). The prefix Ki- is placed before the name of any language (for example, "English" sounds like Kiingereza "Portuguese" - Kireno).
⠀
🗣️ About 35% of Swahili words come from Arabic. For example, the words shukrani (thank you) and kitabu (book).
⠀
🗣️ Swahili also literally adopted some words from English: polisi (police), baiskeli (bicycle). Sounds alike, doesn't it?
⠀
🗣️ There are a few words from Portuguese (meza - table) and German (shule - school).
⠀
🗣️ Initially, Swahili was written in Arabic script, but the modern Swahili alphabet is Latin.
⠀
🗣️ Swahili does not have the letters Q and X. They can only appear in untranslatable proper names (Queen, Max). All words are written in the same way as they are pronounced. Anyone can read a phrase in Swahili!
⠀
🗣️ Believe us or not, Swahili is one of the easiest languages to learn! Mastering Swahili is especially easy for those who speak English well.
