🗣️ Tanzania is a multilingual country. Linguists say that 126 languages are spoken here.

🗣️ There are only 2 official languages: English and Swahili. Others are local dialects of Bantu and Nilotic language groups, as well as several "clicking" Khoisan languages.

🗣️ Swahili is spoken by about 100 million people, it is the language of interethnic communication in the countries of East Africa, and partly of the Southern African countries.

🗣️ Swahili is the first universally recognized African language of international communication. No wonder it is reffered to as "the king of African languages".

🗣️ The language is relatively young: Swahili is about 1000 years old.

🗣️ It originated as the trade language of the Indian Ocean coastline. The coastal regions of Tanzania are the homeland of the language: the first Swahili document was written in Kilwa, and its Zanzibari dialect was adopted as the standard of modern Swahili.

🗣️ In Swahili, the language is called Kiswahili. Why? Sawahili is the plural of the Arabic word sahil (coast). The prefix Ki- is placed before the name of any language (for example, "English" sounds like Kiingereza "Portuguese" - Kireno).

🗣️ About 35% of Swahili words come from Arabic. For example, the words shukrani (thank you) and kitabu (book).

🗣️ Swahili also literally adopted some words from English: polisi (police), baiskeli (bicycle). Sounds alike, doesn't it?

🗣️ There are a few words from Portuguese (meza - table) and German (shule - school).

🗣️ Initially, Swahili was written in Arabic script, but the modern Swahili alphabet is Latin.

🗣️ Swahili does not have the letters Q and X. They can only appear in untranslatable proper names (Queen, Max). All words are written in the same way as they are pronounced. Anyone can read a phrase in Swahili!

🗣️ Believe us or not, Swahili is one of the easiest languages to learn! Mastering Swahili is especially easy for those who speak English well.

⛏️ Olduvai Gorge in Northern Tanzania is a site that holds the earliest evidence of mankind's evolution.

⛏️ Paleoanthropologists have found hundreds of fossilized bones and stone tools in the area dating back millions of years, leading them to conclude that humans evolved in Africa.

⛏️ Olduvai is derived from Maasai word Oldupai (a wild sisal plant that grows in the area).

⛏️ The gorge is located in the Great Rift Valley, in Ngorongoro Conservation Area between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park.

⛏️ The deposits have yielded the fossil remains of more than 60 hominins (members of the human lineage walking on two feet and using tools were found), providing the most continuous known record of human evolution during the past 2 million years, as well as the longest known archaeological record of the development of stone-tool industries.

⛏️ The remains of two species of human ancestors were found in Olduvai Gorge:

💀 Homo habilis, with a brain half the size of modern man, long-armed, with more apelike features, a sagittal crest, but a rounded cranial brain and a robust jaw, known as “Handy man” who was there until 1.75 million years ago and was thought to use simple tools.

💀 Homo erectus or upright man, with increased body size and brain size, with relatively elongated legs and shorter arms in comparison to its torso. Homo erectus made hand axes and occupied the site from 1.75 million years ago until Homo sapiens appeared 195,000 years ago.

⛏️ Olduvai Gorge was designated part of a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.

⛏️ For anyone going on safari in Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, that is interested in archaeology and palaeontology, this is the place to visit!

⛏️ If this post has got you thinking about safari and cultural trip to Tanzania, make sure you like, comment and share it.

💧 Why Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania is red?

🔹 It is the red pigment of the cyanobacteria that gives the characteristic red color to the open waters of the lake and orange color to the shallow water of the lake.

💧 Is the water of Lake Natron red throughout the year?

🔹 No. Since the variety of colours changes due to the evaporation process and concentration level of cyanobacteria, the best months to visit Lake Natron are July and August.

💧 Does Lake Natron turn animals into stones?

🔹 Not quite. The dead animals which fell into the water They get calcified and hard, but not stone.

💧 What makes dead animals mummified?

🔹 The sodium carbonate and other alkaline minerals that are deposited into the lake are actually washed down the surrounding hills. The lake also has large amounts of deposits of sodium carbonate that was once used for Egyptian mummification.

🐆 Português no primeiro comentário ⬇️ "Myths are afraid of truth!" Let's finish our series of misconceptions about Africa. For beginning and continuation press here 👉 .

😱❌ In Africa there is a dangerous criminal situation: thieves and bandits are all around.

In fact, everything is much better than most people think. Especially in Tanzania. Foreign guests are treated with respect, police works well to protect the peace and justice. The usual precautions must be observed:

👉🏻 do not walk in the dark alone in unfamiliar places;
👉🏻 do not bring along expensive gadgets and big amounts of cash money in crowded places, like markets, etc;
👉🏻 choose decent hotels with good reviews (they guarantee protection against thieves).

Better yet, contact us to arrange a trip. We live here! We will advise where it is best to stay and give even more useful recommendations that will protect you from potential troubles.

😱❌ Africa is in a constant political unrest and civil war.

Once upon a time. The long years of struggle for independence from Britain and France, the redistribution of territories, economic and social instability – all this is behind. Now in most African countries the government is democratic. Elections are held, economics, education, medicine and, of course, tourism are developing.

Remember that Tanzania is one of the safest and most prosperous countries of the continent. Best choice for first-timers to explore Africa 😍

🐆 Português no primeiro comentário ⬇️ Cozy home is created from little things. During the lockdown, most of us spend home as much time as never before. We have repeatedly received questions from our friends who have already visited Africa, as well as from our followers: how do Africans decorate their homes?

Press ❤️ and get to know few authentic household items made in East Africa.

🔸 Ebony kitchen utensils stylized as Masai or animal figures. A spoon and fork can be used for salads, a fork is also great for spaghetti, a knife is good for spreading butter and jam.

🔸 Tablecloth, plaid, and pillows made from of "shuka", fabric commonly used by the Masai tribe.

🔸 Bright kitchen apron of "kitenge", strong African fabric with a wide variety of prints.

🔸 "Kitenge" patchwork throw.

🔸 Ebony candlesticks with figures of Masai people.

🔸 "Kikapu" – a basket bag for shopping made of palm leaves. A convenient and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic bags prohibited in Tanzania.

🔸 "Kigoda" – a compact, stable and firm ebony stool, traditionally made without nails.

🔸 "Kitenge" lampshades of any shapes and sizes.

🔸 Leather collars for pets, decorated with beads.

The list will be continued shortly by the hashtag # lunas_wild_rides_buyintanzania

🐆 Português no primeiro comentário ⬇️ ☪️ Eid Mubarak to our dear readers and colleagues who practise Islam! As for the rest, perhaps, you will be interested to know what kind of holiday it is and how Muslims celebrate it in Tanzania and Zanzibar.

☪️ Eid al-Fitr is a holiday of Muslims all around the world. It is also celebrated in Zanzibar and in many coastal areas of East Africa, the majority of whose population professes Islam.

☪️ Eid al-Fitr comes after the end of the fast – a holy month of Ramadan, which is determined by the lunar calendar.

☪️ For the holiday, people buy new clothes for themselves, and especially for children. This day, people visit relatives with their families and walk around the city.

☪️ Men and women attend morning prayer in a mosque or in the open air. After the prayer, they return home for breakfast, which usually consists of spiced milk tea, chapati, cakes, peanut butter, rich chicken or beef soup.

☪️ For lunch, the main dishes are white rice with sauce, pilau or biriani with spices and meat.

☪️ After lunch, children and adults dress up for walking and attending various entertainments – playgrounds, attractions, food courts, and other events specially prepared for this day.

☪️ In the evenings, many young people go out for dinner and night clubs to dance and celebrate.

☪️ Eid al-Fitr lasts 2 days, and many Muslim Tanzanians go on short family trips: some drive to Zanzibar beaches, some go on a safari, others visit to historical ruins and other cultural and natural attractions which Tanzania has to offer.

☪️ This day, people greet each other with the phrase “Eid Mubarak!”, which means “blessed holiday” in Arabic. Since Tanzania is a country where Christianity and Islam have coexisted for centuries in peace and mutual respect, it is a good courtesy when Christians greet their Muslim colleagues or friends saying "Eid Mubarak" (Muslims also congratulate Christians on Christmas or Easter).

❓Is Eid celebrated in your country? Share your family traditions in the comments.

🐆 Português no primeiro comentário ⬇️ Did you know that Tanzania is the second largest producer of wine in African continent, after South Africa? Despite this fact, wine consumption in the country is quite low. However, knowing that many of you, including us, like and value good wines, we could not leave your vacation in Tanzania without such an important thing 🥂

We tried and selected 5 places in different cities of Tanzania, where the wine lover will have plenty to choose from. Save 🔖 the list and thank us with your likes and comments! So, the top 5 wine bars in a "non-wine" country.

1️⃣🍷 TOSCANA WINE BAR, Dar Es Salaam

Privacy, excellent wine list, good snacks and impeccable service.

2️⃣🍷 HUT OF WINE & CHEESE, Dodoma

Dodoma is the only wine region in East Africa. Here you will have the best selection of exquisite Tanzanian wines. Enjoy a relaxing evening with a glass and a plate of local cheeses by the fireplace.

3️⃣🍷 TAPERIA WINE & TAPAS BAR, Stone Town, Zanzibar

The island's first enoteca and snack bar, which offers a wide variety of wines from around the world, as well as cold meat from Italy and Spain.

4️⃣🍷 THE CASK BAR & GRILL, Mwanza

If your program includes a visit to Lake Victoria, drop by The Cask in the evening. It's a lively place with lots of music, people, food and, of course, wine!

5️⃣🍷 IRINGA SUNSET, Iringa

A bar with a unique location on huge rocks with panoramic views of Iringa city. Enjoying a sunset with a glass of wine at the Sunset viewpoint is a real pleasure.

🐆 Português no primeiro comentário ⬇️ Zanzibar offers not only spectacular beaches and diverse cuisine. The island also has some very worthy to see architectural structures:

1️⃣ ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL CHRIST CHURCH
One of the most remarkable examples of the early Christian architecture of East Africa. It was built over 7 years (1873-1879) from coral stone in the place of former slave market. And the current altar of the cathedral is on the exact place where the main "whipping post" of the market used to be. Inside the cathedral there is a wooden cross made of the same "mpundu" tree, under which the heart of David Livingstone is buried.

2️⃣ ZANZIBAR DOORS
Are you surprised? Yeah, Zanzibar doors are among the architectural masterpieces of the island. Each of these carved doors was an indicator of the status of the house owner. The richer he was, the more sophisticated were the patterns on the door, the more massive it was. From the carvings you can find out about the occupation of the former house owner.

3️⃣ HOUSE OF WONDERS
The tallest building in Zanzibar. It was named the house of wonders because it was the first building of the island in which there was electricity, as well as the first building in East Africa in which there was an elevator. Real wonders fir that time!

4️⃣ OLD FORT
The oldest building on archipelago built by the Omani Arabs in 1699 to expell Portuguese colonialists. Now the fortress is home to two largest cultural events in East Africa: Zanzibar Film Festival ZIFF and music festival Sauti za Busara.

5️⃣ LIGHTHOUSE IN NUNGWI
If you go on a boat trip in Nungwi, you will have a view of the oldest lighthouse on the island – a three-stage white stone tower.

Would you like to see these attractions?

🐆 Português no primeiro comentário ⬇️ Why travel to Zanzibar? The main thing people go to Zanzibar for is its magnificent beaches! No one can resist the white soft sand and warm azure water 😉

So put the other plans aside, and let's drive along Zanzibar beaches!

1️⃣ KENDWA
WE head to the north of the island. Kendwa is dotted with many luxury hotels, it is even called the "beach of millionaires". There are no tides, which makes it the most comfortable beach for swimming.

2️⃣ NUNGWI
Nungwi is the northernmost point of the island. The tides are insignificant here. Nungwi is famous for its night parties.

3️⃣ MATEMWE
Keep east of Nungwi. Tourism infrastructure is undeveloped here. Thus, Matemwe is perfect choice who those who seek privacy and unity with nature.

4️⃣ PAJE
East Coast of Zanzibar. Paje is famous spot for kitesurfing. It is windy enough to create the perfect waves for this amazing water sport. There is a lot of youth here, and kite schools with equipment rental and kite courses are all around.

5️⃣ MICHAMVI
The beach is deserted even in high season due to strong tides. Swimming in the ocean is possible only at certain hours, at high tide. But Michamvi is famous for the most beautiful mangroves which will strike your imagination. We will take here for SUP-tour in the mangrove forest, a very fun activity.

🎁 BONUS to those who read up to here 😊 Do you plan to spend your holidays on one of these beaches? Let us know about it, and we will help you choose a hotel and give a DISCOUNT on the booking! 🤑

🐆 Português no primeiro comentário ⬇ Local food is the essential part of exploring a new country or region. Foodies say that trying new cuisine is the best part of travelling. Now we will reveal our secrets to you: below there is a list of 5 best, to our taste, local restaurants in Zanzibar!

1️⃣ LUKMAAN RESTAURANT in Stone Town
For those who want to try everything at once. It is always crowded here. However, people come here not for privacy, but for the true tastes of Zanzibar. Try rice dishes – biriani and pilau, octopus soup, seafood, grilled chicken, stewed spinach, Zanzibar bread with sesame seeds, and flvariety of fresh juices. Please note that there is no alcohol in Luckman.

2️⃣ TROPICANA BEACH RESTAURANT in Kendwa
On weekends, live music is played here. As for food, try fish, curry, rice, stewed vegetables and excellently sliced fruit. Tropicana is famous for its signature serving of dishes – just crab soup served in coconut says a lot! Here you can drink a glass or two of African wine.

3️⃣ GERRY'S BAR & RESTAURANT in Nungwi
For those who want to snack right on the beach – burgers, french fries, vegetable salads, fried chicken and fish. You can order cocktails and beer.

4️⃣ LUCIANA RESTAURANT in Page
Charming Zanzibar lady Luciana offers mouth-watering menu and relaxed ambience. Taste traditional ugali, barracuda and grilled lobster, vegetables, fruit salads and cocktails. Vegetarian food is also available.

5️⃣ THE SEA HORSE in Jambiani
Local chefs are real gurus of Zanzibar cuisine. Foodies recommend tasting soft squid in coconut sauce, fresh fish and crab. And, of course, famous Zanzibar fresh juices and coctails.

Beautiful ladies Natalia and Elena from Moscow chose to spend their vacation with us on safari to Tarangire National park and Ngorongoro Crater 🦁 coffee tour in the slopes of Kilimanjaro, visit to Masai tribe, cultural excursion and snorkeling in Zanzibar 🌴 This is what that say about their trip:

🔅 "Many thanks to the organizers for our trip to Tanzania. Every smallest detail was considered, everything was performed in the best way! We flew from Zanzibar to mainland Tanzania in the company of a small group of 5 people and a Russian-speaking guide Hassan (there is a separate story about him, I have never met the best professional in my life, having traveled half the globe). We didn't have to worry about anything – the caring manager was always in touch sending us messages in the form of further schedules and actions! As for the trip itself, there is no way to put it in words, I'll try to convey it with a photograph! I sincerely wish everyone to get the impressions that we get from this trip!!!" 🔅

"We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop." – Mother Theresa.

We do not think every day how relevant these words are! But now, looking at the video of the endless ocean from our still ongoing lockdown, let's think through them. And we realize that this thought makes sense not only now, but always. Every day of our hustle and bustle.

"Nós mesmos sentimos que o que estamos fazendo é apenas uma gota no oceano. Mas o oceano seria menor se faltasse essa gota." – Madre Teresa.

Não pensamos todos os dias como essas palavras são relevantes! Mas agora, olhando o vídeo do oceano sem fim de nosso confinamento ainda em andamento, vamos pensar sobre eles. E percebemos que esse reflexão faz sentido não apenas agora, mas sempre. Todos os dias da nossa agitação.

Let's bust some more myths about the African continent 😊
Part 1 and Part 2 here 👉

8️⃣❌The food in Africa is a way too exotic for your stomach – FALSE

Firstly, in tourist places European cuisine is very common. And secondly, Tanzanian food is absolutely not as exotic as in, say, South Asia. Snakes, worms and bugs are NOT eaten here. The main dishes in Tanzania are grilled meat, rice and pilaf with stewed vegetables or coconut milk sauces. French fries, or chips, are also very popular here. They are served everywhere – from street takeaway points to decent restaurants. As for national cuisine, we shall mention “ugali” (thick maize pap) and batter-fried or grilled bananas. All in all, no one has a chance to remain hungry 😋 As for junk food lovers, there is even KFC fast food chain in Dar es Salaam.

9️⃣❌There are snakes and poisonous insects all around – FALSE

Well, of course, they are found here. But not as much as it appears to you. There are almost NO chances to meet a snake on a safari. Unless you're lucky to see it from your safari vehicle, if the snake suddenly decides to crawl across the road. There are no snakes on the territories of hotels and in the cities. The territories of safari lodges are treated for insects. In addition, all beds in the rooms are equipped with mosquito nets. And for walking tours it is recommended to bring along your mosquito repellent.

🔟❌Wild animals can attack you on safari – FALSE

If you follow our recommendations and basic safety precautions, the attack of wild animals on humans is entirely excluded. In addition, a professional wildlife guide always accompanies you on a safari. He understands the habits of animals and will prevent any potentially dangerous situation.

🐆 Português no primeiro comentário ⬇️

"Wild animals are less wild and more human than many humans of this world" – said Munia Khan, the writer. Why these words come to our mind today?

Today, May 15, 2020 is the 15th anniversary of Endangered Species Day. Isn't it an opportunity for people of all ages to celebrate and learn about endangered species and how to protect them?

Would you like your children and grandchildren to clap hands in excitement, after spotting black rhino in the wild, just as you did once on your safari? And what about chimpanzee in the rainforest? And the red colobus monkey in Zanzibar?

In Tanzania alone, according to the IUCN Red List, 50+ species of mammals and 70+ species of birds are endangered or critically endangered. This is not to mention reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish, and other animals with similar conservation status.

So, which Tanzanian animals require protection? Get to know some of them!

🦋 BLACK RHINOCEROS

This impressive savannah giant is in critical danger due to poachers who aim for its horn. In Tanzania, black rhino is found only in Ngorongoro Crater and in Serengeti National Park.

🦋 ABBOTT'S DUIKER (TANZANIAN DUIKER), in Swahili – minde

Have you heard of duikers? They are small African antelopes. And minde is a rare subspecies found only in a few scattered enclaves in Tanzania. In addition, this animal is nocturnal. That's why there are only very few photos of Tanzanian duiker, and the first photo ever was taken only in 2003.

🦋 PEMBA FLYING FOX
It looks like a huge bat (imagine a wingspan over 1.5 m!) with a cute fox-like face. It is found only in Pemba island, the second largest island of Zanzibar archipelago. No wonder that this animal is so-called symbol of Pemba. The good news is that nowadays local population is involved in conservation since the island benefits from bat-based ecotourism.

🦒 Let's continue to bust popular myths about the African continent. Read Part 1 here 👉

5️⃣❌Africans live in huts made of palm leaves and wear animal skins – FALSE

In fact, there are numerous cities in Africa with buildings of very diverse architecture. There are even skyscrapers! In the villages, people live in houses made of stone, bricks or clay. But, fortunately, still there are some authentic tribes living in huts and hunting with spears and bows. And sometimes they use animal skins as an element of a traditional attire. This ancient lifestyle is their conscious choice. We are happy to take you to such tribes' settlements, so that you see everything with your own eyes.

6️⃣❌Total poverty – FALSE

In general, the economic level of African countries almost doesn't differ from the level of other developing countries. In Tanzania, in particular, the middle class is rising, a lot of money is being invested in the economy and tourism. Fashionable hotels, recreation areas, shopping centers and other attributes of a good life are being built with rapid speed. Tanzania is one of the most prosperous and promising countries on the continent.

7️⃣❌Nationwide ignorance – FALSE

Most African countries have introduced free primary school education long ago. In Tanzania, in addition to public schools, there are more than a few private schools, including international ones. Children, starting from kindergarten, apart from other subjects, learn languages – English and Swahili. And later they have a choice of a third language to learn. Naturally, not everyone has a higher education, but every year the number of university graduates is rising. Africans study either in national universities or abroad.
