The Alpine desert zone, the fourth ecological zone on Mount Kilimanjaro, is situated between the Moorland (third zone) and the Arctic zone (fifth zone). It is characterized by sparse vegetation, including tussock grasses, mosses, and lichens, amidst extreme weather conditions. This zone typically spans from approximately 4,000 to 4,900 meters in elevation. Harsh winds and freezing temperatures restrict plant life to resilient, low-growing species like lichens and mosses. The landscape is rugged, featuring gravel and scree slopes that dominate the terrain. 🐦⬛ Alpine chat, is a small bird species found in the alpine zones of Mount Kilimanjaro. With distinctive white eye-rings and brown in colour with white feathers on either side of it's tail, it is well adapted to the high-altitude environment, thriving in the unique ecosystems of the mountain.
These birds are often spotted in the Afro-alpine moorlands, characterized by tussock grasses, heath, and unique flora. The alpine chat is known for its agile movements as it flits between shrubs and grasses, foraging for insects and nectar. Its presence adds to the biodiversity of Kilimanjaro's diverse ecological zones, making it a fascinating part of the mountain's avian life.

The Barranco wall 🏔️ Mount Kilimanjaro, The Barranco Wall is a large lava flow that solidified into a series of cliffs and rock formations.
