12-Day Kilimanjaro Machame Route Climb and Tanzania Safari

Itinerary:
Day 0: Arrival in Kilimanjaro Airport and Transfer to Moshi
Welcome to Tanzania! Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our friendly team at Tanzania smile adventure will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi, a vibrant town located at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. Moshi is the gateway to the mountain and offers a perfect place to relax and prepare for your upcoming adventure. In the evening, you'll meet with your guide for a detailed briefing about your Kilimanjaro climb. This is the ideal time to ask any last-minute questions and ensure you’re fully prepared for the journey ahead.

Day 1: Moshi to Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins today! After an early breakfast at your hotel, we’ll drive you to Machame Gate, the starting point of the Machame Route. The day’s hike will take you through the lush rainforest, where you’ll be surrounded by towering trees, vibrant flowers, and the occasional sighting of wildlife, such as monkeys. The trail gradually ascends, leading you to Machame Camp, where you’ll spend your first night on the mountain.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Today’s trek will take you out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone, where the landscape becomes more open with stunning views of the mountain. The trail is steeper, but the reward is the incredible scenery as you make your way to Shira Camp, which sits on a high plateau. Here, you can enjoy panoramic views and a breathtaking sunset over the Shira Ridge.

• Time: 4-6 hours
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
This day is designed to help your body acclimatize to the higher altitudes. You’ll start with a steady climb towards Lava Tower, where you’ll take a break and enjoy the incredible scenery at 4,600 meters. After lunch, you’ll descend into the Barranco Valley, surrounded by towering cliffs and giant groundsels. The descent helps your body adjust to the altitude, preparing you for the days ahead. You’ll arrive at Barranco Camp, nestled in a valley below the Barranco Wall.
• Altitude: 3,750m to 3,900m (via Lava Tower at 4,600m)

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Today’s adventure begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that rewards you with incredible views once you reach the top. After conquering the wall, the trail continues through glacial valleys and across ridges, leading you to Karanga Camp. This shorter day is crucial for acclimatization, giving you time to rest and enjoy the dramatic landscapes surrounding you.

• Time: 4-5 hours
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A gradual climb takes you to Barafu Camp, the final stop before your summit attempt. The trail crosses desolate alpine desert, where the landscape is rugged and sparse. Upon reaching Barafu, you’ll prepare for the night-time ascent to the summit. After an early dinner, it’s time to rest and gather your strength for the final push to the top of Africa.

• Time: 4-5 hours
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Around midnight, you’ll start your summit attempt under the stars. The climb to Uhuru Peak is the most challenging part of your journey, but reaching the top at sunrise is a moment you’ll never forget. Standing at 5,895 meters, you’ll be on the highest point of Africa. After taking in the views and capturing your summit photos, you’ll begin your descent. You’ll stop at Barafu Camp for a short rest and then continue down to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
• Altitude: 4,640m to 5,895m (summit), then descend to 3,060m
• Distance: 5km ascent, 12km descent
• Time: 7-8 hours ascent, 6-8 hours descent
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
Today, you’ll complete your descent to Mweka Gate. The trail takes you back through the rainforest, where you can reflect on your incredible achievement. Upon reaching the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate as a proud reminder of your journey. We’ll then transfer you back to Moshi, where you can relax and celebrate your successful climb.

Day 8: Moshi to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, we’ll drive you to Tarangire National Park, known for its vast elephant herds and picturesque baobab trees. The park is rich with wildlife, including lions, giraffes, zebras, and more. You’ll enjoy an afternoon game drive, exploring the diverse habitats and spotting wildlife in their natural environment. In the evening, relax at your lodge or camp within the park.

Day 9: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park
Start your day with a morning game drive in Tarangire before heading towards the world-famous Serengeti National Park. The journey takes you through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you might spot wildlife en route. Upon arrival in the Serengeti, enjoy an afternoon game drive in one of the richest wildlife habitats on the planet. Depending on the time of year, you may witness the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeests and zebras cross the plains.

Day 10: Serengeti National Park
Spend a full day exploring the vast Serengeti, with morning and afternoon game drives. The park is home to the Big Five – lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffaloes – along with many other species of wildlife. Your experienced guide will help you spot animals and understand the complex ecosystem of the Serengeti. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the wild, surrounded by the beauty of the African savannah.

Day 11: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater
Rise early for a final game drive in the Serengeti before heading to the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Descend into the crater for a game drive and experience the diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife in this unique setting. In the evening, relax at your lodge or camp near the crater rim.

Day 12: Ngorongoro to Lake Manyara National Park to Moshi and Departure
After breakfast, we’ll drive to Lake Manyara National Park, famous for its tree-climbing lions and large flocks of flamingos. Enjoy a game drive through the park, exploring its diverse habitats, including forests, grasslands, and the shores of Lake Manyara. Keep an eye out for elephants, giraffes, hippos, and more as you make your way through this beautiful park. In the afternoon, we’ll drive you back to Moshi, where you can relax or explore the town before we transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure, marking the end of your incredible 12-day adventure in Tanzania.
