Kilimanjaro is a great mountain for first-time climbers, and with proper preparation and physical fitness, beginners may succeed in summiting the highest peak in Africa. Be sure to come prepared and you'll have the best chance of success.

Kilimanjaro's altitude is a significant challenge, but climbers do not need supplemental oxygen to climb Kilimanjaro or reach the summit. To reach to the summit you use the acclimatization method of walking slowly “pole pole” climb high, sleep low.

The journey has not been without its challenges, but we have overcome the team together as a united team. The camaraderie and support among us has been instrumental in reaching new height of Kilimanjaro 5895m

06/04/2024

The five distinct climate zones on Kilimanjaro, from the tropical forest to the arctic tundra of the summit has been compared to walking from the equator to the North Pole.

Each climate zone has it’s own unique characteristics, both in terms of vegetation and animal life.

1. Cultivation Zone:
Alt. Range: 2,600 to 6,000 ft (792 to 1,800 m)
Temperature Range: Days: 70-90 F / 21-32 C
Nights: 40-60 F /4-15 C

As you leave Arusha or Moshi to head to the park gates to begin your climb, you’ll see plenty of evidence of human activity. From grazing of livestock, to small farming operations. This has changed the native vegetation patterns, which would once have been scrub land and lowland forest. The southern side of the mountain has more rainfall and coupled with the fertile volcanic soil makes it ideal growing conditions.

2. Rain Forest Zone:
Alt. Range: 6,000 to 9,200 ft (1,800 to 2,800 m)
Temperature Range: Days: 70-90 F / 21-32 C
Nights: 40-60 F /4-15 C
Encircling the whole of the mountain is a montane or tropical rain forest. Dense and damp, this forest is home to many different bird and animal species. Due to the increase in human activity, it’s rare to see any big game these days, but monkeys and birds abound.

The trees are covered in ‘old man’s beard’, orchids grow on the branches of ancient trees. Black and white Colobus monkeys live in the treetops and sometimes there are troops of Baboons. Though difficult to spot, small antelope, rodents and bush pigs make this their home.

3. Heath and Moorland Zone:
Alt. Range: 9,200 to 11,000 ft (2,800 to 3,350 m)
Temperature Range: Days: 50-80 F / 10-27 C
Nights: 30-60 F /(-1)-15 C

The forest seems to stop abruptly as you enter the heath and moorland zone, and suddenly you’ve got magnificent views. Characterized by the scrubby shrubs, giant heathers and tussok grasses, the lower part of this zone is sometimes compared to the Scottish Highlands.
As you ascend, and average temperatures drop, you’ll see the giant lobelias and senecios. These plants have developed unique characteristics to allow them to thrive in the drastic temperature swings. As the senecios grow taller, their leaves die and stay on the plant, forming a fur-like insulation around the trunk. Lobelias close their leaves at night, covering their central core for warmth.

Very few animals live here. Sightings of eland, small antelope and occasional elephants have been reported, mostly on their way to somewhere else. Small rodents make their home in tiny caves carved out of the volcanic rock. Keep an eye out for soaring raptors

4. Highland Alpine Desert:
Alt. Range: 13,200 to 16,500 ft (4,020 to 5,030 m)
Temperature Range: Days: Days: 10-60 F / (-12) -15 C
Nights:10-40 F /(-12)-4 C
Intense rays of the sun beat down during the day and at night it’s below freezing. There is very little water in this area, and only the hardiest plants can exist. It’s barren and inhospitable. You’ll come across small hardy plants, very few flowers and the odd tussoky-grass.

The landscape is dominated by rugged rock formations, and panoramic views. If you look closely, you’ll see mosses and lichens, which cover the rocks, avoiding the soil altogether. They may look inert, but these are the plants that thrive in this barren environment.

5. Arctic Summit zone:
Alt. Range: 16,500 to 19,340 ft (5,030 to 5,895 m)
Temperature Range: Days: 10-40 F / (-12) -4 C
Nights: -15-20 F /(-26)-(-7) C

Also known as the Arctic zone, this area is dry, freezing cold at night and subject to intense sunshine during the day. With half the available oxygen as sea level, the area is dominated by huge glaciers, and large boulders. There is no resident animal or plant life, except for a few very hardy lichens, slow-growing and probably ancient.

It’s very cold here, with blustery winds and nighttime temperatures well below freezing. As you set off for your summit attempt, there may be ice and snow underfoot, it’s bitterly cold, even at midday and the sun’s radiation is harsh.
Sunscreen is essential on any exposed parts of your body, the dry air will dehydrate you quickly, and you’ll need warm layers to keep your core temperature up

When You Plan To Climb Mount Kilimanjaro It's Better To Choose The Best Route Which Suits For You.

Mount Kilimanjaro has five Popular different ascending routes. Starting from 5 days the shortest to 9 days the longest!

Marangu route: Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest, most well-established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route that offers sleeping huts in dormitory-style accommodations.

Machame route: The Machame route is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca-Cola route Unlike the gradual incline and hut accomodations found on the Marangu Route, the climbers on Machame hike steeper trails, for longer distances, while sleeping in tents. The Machame Route climb can be done in a minimum of six days on the mountain.

Rongai route: The Rongai route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. Though gaining popularity amongst climbers, Rongai has low traffic. It is the preferred route for those looking for an alternative to the crowded Marangu route, for those who would like a more remote hike, and for those who are climbing during the rainy season.

Umbwe route: This route is the steepest with the shortest and most direct routes to the Southern Glaciers, Western Breach, and Uhuru Peak. It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on Kilimanjaro. However, it is quite taxing, primarily due to the relatively fast ascent to higher altitude, but the rewards are plentiful. Very steep route best suited to experienced trekkers.

Lemosho route: As a newer route, it is more remote and arguably more beautiful, but a bit longer and slightly more expensive. It starts on the Western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate, which is a further drive from town and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route. After beautiful forests and moorlands,it crosses the Shira Plateau on day 3 to connect with the Machame Route at Lava Tower and down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit.

The more days you spend on the mountain, the more expensive the trip. However unless you are very confident in your performance at altitude, play it safe and book one of the longer tours to give yourself time to acclimatize. The success rate for climbers who attempt a five-day ascent is less than half It's need to be fit enough and well prepared for your trekk.

The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the warmest and driest times of year, from December to mid-March and mid-June to the end of October. However, although these are considered to be the best times to climb the mountain in terms of weather.

THE BEST ROUTE TO CLIMB MOUNT KILIMANJARO;Are you plan to climbing Kilimanjaro but you don't know which route to pick?A...
25/01/2024

THE BEST ROUTE TO CLIMB MOUNT KILIMANJARO;

Are you plan to climbing Kilimanjaro but you don't know which route to pick?

As the popularity of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro continues to increase, potential climbers are often uncertain as to which route to take. There are seven major routes used to climb Kilimanjaro. Each route has its own advantages and disadvantages. When selecting the route, make sure it is the appropriate route for your desires, physical ability, aptitude and comfort level.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING THE KILIMANJARO ROUTE;

To choose the best Kilimanjaro route for you, there are plenty of variables to be mindful of.

WHO :
Who is climbing? The whole group's abilities must be factored into choosing a route. Are there novices in your group? Are there people who have never been to high altitudes? Pick a route that best fits everyone.

WHAT :
What limitations surround your climb? Are you bound by a budget? Or the number of days on your trip? There are cheaper and more expensive routes, and shorter and longer itineraries. Get an idea of how much money and how many days people are willing to spend on the mountain.

HOW :
How do you see your trek? Do you want the most challenging route or a less strenuous one? Kilimanjaro can bring out a lot of discomfort and suffering. Some people don't want to be pushed too hard. These answers will affect which route isfor you.

WHERE :
Where do you want to begin your climb? The routes start from all sides of the mountain. Where you begin affects cost, scenery and scenic variety. For instance, the western routes are more scenic because they cover more of the mountain.

WHY :
Why are you climbing? Is it very important to summit? Then choose a route with a high success rate. Do you want to take the best photos? Then pick a scenic route. Do you just want to be there? Then choose a quick, inexpensive route.

WHEN :
When are you climbing? If you are climbing during the dry season, great. But if you are climbing during the rainy season or the shoulder seasons, then the route you select can play into the climb's difficulty. Climbs around holidays and full moons are especially crowded.

KILIMANJARO ROUTES OVERVIEW;

Below are brief descriptions of the climbing routes on Mount Kilimanjaro.

MARANGU ROUTE:
Popular tourist route, approaches from southeast, easy, gentle gradients, beautiful rain forest section and moorlands, comfortable but basic hut shelter, poor acclimatization profile, descent on same trail.
72 km
5-6 days.

MACHAME ROUTE:
Most popular route, approaches from south, very scenic route with southern traverse, difficult route but very good for acclimatization, camping.
62 km
6-7 days.

RONGAI ROUTE:
Long access drive to trailhead, approaches from north, remote, less frequented, easy, gentle gradients, beautiful alpine desert section, good alternative to Marangu, camping, fair acclimatization profile, camping.
73 km
6-7 days.

LEMOSHO ROUTE:
Long access drive to trailhead, approaches from west, remote, less frequented, beautiful heath section, very scenic with southern traverse, camping, difficult route but excellent for acclimatization, camping
70 km
7-8 days.

SHIRA ROUTE:
Almost same as Lemosho, approaches from west, long access drive to trailhead, trail starts at 11,800 ft, remote, less frequented, beautiful heath section, very scenic with southern traverse, camping, difficult route but excellent for acclimatization if ok at 11,800 ft, camping.
56 km
7-8 days.

AMONG THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THESE ROUTES:

The routes have starting points located on multiple sides of the mountain.
The routes vary distance and accordingly so do the completion times.
There are relatively easy trails, difficult routes, and even dangerous ones.
Certain routes are favorable for altitude acclimatisation due to their route profile.
There are routes that are better when climbing during the rainy season.
One route offers hut accommodations while the rest are camping routes.
The map below shows the routes and the corresponding statistics:

Machame is the most popular route on the mountain, with an estimated 45% of all climbers using this route. Next is the Marangu route, with an estimated 40% of all climbers opting for this route. Lemosho and Rongai see far less use, but are thepreferred routes for the more reputable (expensive) Kilimanjaro outfitters, and are thus growing in popularity.

Picking the wrong route can mean a unnecessarily difficult trek, a failed summit, or getting sick and/or injured. So it is necessary to compare the different elements that makes each route unique.
