Mount Kilimanjaro Reclaims Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction Title At World Travel Awards 2024

By Tanzania Times

Mount Kilimanjaro, which is the highest peak on the continent, has reclaimed its title as Africa’s leading Tourist Attraction site during the World Travel Awards Gala Ceremony held at Diani Beach in Kenya.

There was a total of nine African Nominees for the category; including Tanzania’s other entry, the Ngorongoro Conservation, Lake Malawi, Botswana’s Okavango Delta and the Pyramids of Giza, in Egypt.

South Africa’s which had the highest number of entries in the category walked out empty handed despite fielding the Table Mountain, of Cape Town, which previously won the title several times, the Historical Robben Island, Cape Town’s waterfront harbor and beaches as well as the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway.

Mount Kilimanjaro won Africa’s leading tourist attraction at the World Travel Awards for the first time in 2013, taking over from the Pyramids of Gizza.

The Pyramids of Egypt won the category for the first and last time in 2012. This was when the awards were established.

Kilimanjaro went on to win the title for four consecutive years in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 before losing it to South Africa’s Table Mountain in 2019.

Cape Town’s Table Mountain again managed to maintain the top WTA position for four consecutive years until 2023 when the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of Tanzania won it for the very first time.

In 2024 however, Mount Kilimanjaro managed to grab back the top Africa’s leading tourist attraction title at the World Travel Awards after six years. It seems more travellers voted for the giant land feature in the course of 2024.

Mount Kilimanjaro with two main peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi is a dormant volcano located in Moshi Municipality of Northern Tanzania.

Also known as ‘Kili’ the mountain, towering at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level, is the highest peak on the African continent and the tallest free-standing

Kilimanjaro Climbing 6Days Umbwe Route.

The Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct route. It is considered to be very difficult and is the most challenging way up Mount Kilimanjaro. Due to the quick ascent, Umbwe does not provide the necessary stages for altitude acclimatization. Although the traffic on this route is very low, the chances of success 80%.
The route is offered at a minimum of six days, though seven days is recommended when attempting this route. The Umbwe route should only be attempted by those who are very strong hikers and are confident in their ability to acclimatize, but can be added whereby giving the climber an extra day in the Karanga Valley. The descent trail is the same as the Mweka Route.

The Maasai people, native to Tanzania, are known for their colorful culture and timeless traditions. They wear bright red shukas and intricate beadwork, making them easy to recognize. The Maasai live a semi-nomadic life centered around their cattle, which are vital to their way of life and spirituality. They have a deep bond with nature and the wildlife of the African savannas, living in harmony with the land. During your Safari, you may visit the Maasai Tribe to better understand their culture and way of living. It's truly a remarkable experience.

WHICH IS THE BEST ROUTE TO CLIMB KILIMANJARO?
Having helped over 10,000 people climb Kilimanjaro we know that for every one of them, the best route was the route that gave them the best chance to stand on the top of this awesome mountain. So there are just four routes up Kilimanjaro that we recommend: the Machame Route, Lemosho route, Rongai route, and the Northern Circuit. A map of these routes and a brief description of each is below.

FACTS ABOUT KILIMANJARO
Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the highest peak in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. At 5895 metres, to climb Kilimanjaro is a great challenge, not to be underestimated, but entirely feasible for the hill walker looking to combine a high mountain adventure with going to Africa.

MACHAME ROUTE | This is our favorite route for a short climb as it offers a high chance of success over just 7 days. It has an interesting approach through all of Kilimanjaro’s diverse climate zones. Its downside is that everybody likes it, so in peak periods it can be very busy.

LEMOSHO ROUTE | Stepping up in cost and adding an extra day, this is the best 8 day route on the mountain. It has fantastic views and a really interesting approach from the West of the mountain.
NORTHERN CIRCUIT | If money and time are not an issue then it is worth checking out the Northern Circuit. It has the same attractive approach as the Lemosho but then heads north where you will find yourselves nearly alone.
RONGAI ROUTE | This route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north of the mountain close to the Kenyan border. It is a very quiet route, and is not normally our first choice as there is very little vegetation as it has much less rainfall. This means it is a good route to choose in the rainy season and it is always generally quiet..

FITNESS AND ALTITUDE SICKNESS ON KILIMANJARO
No doubt the trek is challenging and you are going to extreme altitude, however, the pace is slow due to going to altitude, which often surprises people, but it’s essential for a safe and successful ascent. We have a page on training for Kilimanjaro but generally we would recommend practising by hiking on the hills with a backpack on for at least several months prior to the trip.

Kilimanjari explore
Mt Meru Treks

Mt Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania - fifth highest in Africa at 4,565m. It is located inside of Arusha National Park, a one hour drive from Moshi. Similar to Mt Kilimanjaro, this is not a technical climb so no special climbing gear or techniques are needed. The climb is most commonly done as a four days itinerary, although a three day option is possible but not recommended unless you are quite fit. The added day is on the descent, so the longer itinerary does not add to acclimatization, but breaks up a long and grueling summit day. The climb is steeper than Mt Kilimanjaro. Many people use this as an acclimatization trek before attempting Mt Kilimanjaro but it is a wonderful and beautiful climb in its own right. The number of people climbing the mountain is far, far less than Mt Kilimanjaro.

At the lower altitudes, encountering animals is quite possible so an armed park ranger is required to accompany all climbers. Since the number of rangers is limited, they often combine groups together to accompany one ranger. These groups will be from various tour operators and each will be expected to have their own guide, cook , porters, etc. We do not have any control over how or if the park groups people.

Mount Meru is the first sight you can see when reaching Arusha town.

The mountain is with its 4,566 m (14,990 feet) Tanzania's second highest peak after Kilimanjaro and the fifth highest in Africa. The mountain has two peaks: Meru Summmit, the highest point, and Ash Cone, an additional peak inside the crater which was formed after a more recent volcanic activity. On clear days one can see Great Rift Valley and Kitumbeini and Gelai volcanoes in the western part, and in the east its neighbor Mount Kilimanjaro with Kibo and Shira Plateau.

The peak can be ascended in 3 or 4 days on the Momela Route
It is the only way up to the summit. You don't need any technical equipment for the climb but you will need to be prepared for the altitude gain. The best thing you can do is to take your time for proper acclimatisation.

Spectacular views
The climb offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and wildlife on the forested slopes and the summit itself offers an amazing view of small cones and craters, which are probably the results of numerous volcanic activities in the past.

The climb to Mount Meru is a rewarding experience
You first pass through a savannah where you have the possibility to spot buffaloes and giraffes. At the lower slopes of Mount Meru you can find parkland, grassland and a rainforest with red-hot pokers and Spanish moss. The giant heather zone and the moorlands are forested by giant lobelias. Close to the summit you can spot everlasting flowers in this alpine desert. The way up to the summit is through a narrow and barren ridge. At the summit you can have amazing views of the Ash Cone inside the crater. While the best choice to explore Mount Meru is by climbing it up to Meru Summit, you can also spend your time at the mountain and its surrounding with different activities such as a walking safari in the national park, canoeing in the Small Momella Lake, bird watching or even game-viewing.

The wildlife and the birds of this area are amazing
The most prominent among the 400 different bird species on Mount Meru are lanner falcon, Levaillant's cuckoo and crowned eagle. The animals you can see around the mountain are giraffes, white colobus monkey, buffaloes, elephants, baboons and flamingos around the Momella lakes.

The formation of Mount Meru
It happened after the formation of Great Rift Valley, when million years ago the volcano standing on this area lost its top after a gigantic explosion. This explosion gave Mount Meru its shape of a horseshoe. Mount Meru is still an active volcano with the last smaller eruption in 1910. The first person to climb Mount Meru up to the peak was Dr. Fitz Jaeger in 1904. The local Waarusha people who leave around Mount Meru regard it a sacred place. They sacrifice a bull or sheep every year to the mountain for a rainy season. Mount Meru offers two huts for overnight stays, Miriakamba and Saddle hut. Additionally the Arusha National Park has three campsites, a rest-house and few lodges.

Short Overview
Mount Meru is the first sight you can see when reaching Arusha town. The mountain is with its 4,566 m Tanzania's second highest peak after Kilimanjaro and the fifth highest in Africa. Meru Summmit, the highest point, and Ash Cone, an additional peak inside the crater which was formed after a more recent volcanic activity.
