The Machame Route is a popular and slightly more challenging route for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Here's a sample 7-day itinerary for the Machame Route:
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Arrive in Moshi, Tanzania.
Transfer to your hotel.
Meet your guide for a pre-climb briefing.
Rest and prepare for the climb.
Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp (3,010 meters / 9,875 feet)
Drive to Machame Gate for registration.
Begin the trek through rainforest to Machame Camp.
Hike duration: Approximately 5-7 hours.
Overnight at Machame Camp.
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,845 meters / 12,615 feet)
Ascend through the forest, crossing the valley and ridges.
Hike duration: Approximately 4-6 hours.
Overnight at Shira Camp.
Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960 meters / 12,995 feet)
Trek across the Shira Plateau.
Hike through the Lava Tower and descent to Barranco Camp.
Hike duration: Approximately 5-7 hours.
Overnight at Barranco Camp.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035 meters / 13,255 feet)
Climb the Barranco Wall.
Traverse the Karanga Valley to reach Karanga Camp.
Hike duration: Approximately 4-5 hours.
Overnight at Karanga Camp.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673 meters / 15,331 feet)
Ascend to Barafu Camp through the Alpine desert.
Rest and prepare for the summit attempt.
Hike duration: Approximately 4-6 hours.
Overnight at Barafu Camp.
Day 7: Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters / 19,341 feet) - Mweka Camp
Wake up around midnight for the summit attempt.
Reach Stella Point by sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak.
Descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest.
Continue the descent to Mweka Camp.
Hike duration: Approximately 11-15 hours.
Overnight at Mweka Camp.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate - Departure
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate.
Complete the necessary paperwork and receive your summit certificates.
Transfer back to Moshi.
